Elections to Sheffield City Council were held on 5 May 1994. One third of the council was up for election. Since the previous election, three by-elections had taken place, resulting in two Lib Dem gains from Labour in Brightside and Walkley and a successful hold of a Dore seat by the Conservatives. This, along with a defection from Burngreave councillor James Jamison, left Labour down three, the Liberal Democrats up two and the Conservatives unchanged going into this election. Sheffield City Council
Sheffield City Council is the city council for the metropolitan borough of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. It consists of 84 councillors, elected to represent 28 wards, each with three councillors. It is currently under No Overall Control, with Labour, the Liberal Democrats and the Green Party each holding chair positions in a proportionate number of committees, with Labour chairing four Committees, the Liberal Democrats chairing three and the Greens chairing two. History The council was founded as the Corporation of Sheffield in 1843, when Sheffield was incorporated (see History of Sheffield). In 1889, it attained county borough status and in 1893 city status. Kali Mountford
Carol Jean Mountford (née Newton; born 12 January 1954) is a British Labour Party politician who served as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Colne Valley from 1997 until she retired from the House of Commons at the 2010 general election. Early life Mountford was born in Crewe, the daughter of an engine driver. She attended Crewe Grammar School for Girls (became King's Grove High School in the late 1970s and The Oaks Academy in 2016) on Buchan Grove in Crewe. Jan Wilson
Jan Wilson CBE (1944 – 2 August 2010) was a Labour councillor in Sheffield and formerly the leader of Sheffield City Council. Her career outside politics saw her volunteer with the Citizens Advice Bureau in 1975, and she joined the staff in 1988, remaining until 2002. She was Leader of the Labour Group on Sheffield City Council from 1998 until her death in 2010, and served twice as Leader of the Council, in 1998–99 and again in 2002–08. On both occasions, she lost office to opposition Liberal Democrats. In December 2006, she was appointed a CBE for her public services. Sheffield City Council Elections
Sheffield City Council elections usually take place by thirds, three years out of every four. Sheffield City Council is the local authority for the metropolitan borough of Sheffield in South Yorkshire, England. Each of Sheffield's 28 wards is represented by three positions on the council, meaning there are usually 28 seats contested in each local election. 1967, 1973, 2004 and 2016 saw new ward boundaries and therefore all seats were contested. Political control From 1889 to 1974 Sheffield was a county borough, independent of any county council. Under the Local Government Act 1972 it had its territory enlarged and became a metropolitan borough, with South Yorkshire County Council providing county-level services. The first election to the reconstituted city council was held in 1973, initially operating as a shadow authority before coming into its revised powers on 1 April 1974.
