Leonid Makarovych Kravchuk ( uk, Леонід Макарович Кравчук; 10 January 1934 – 10 May 2022) was a Ukrainian politician and the first president of Ukraine, serving from 5 December 1991 until 19 July 1994. In 1992, he signed the Lisbon Protocol, undertaking to give up Ukraine's nuclear arsenal. He was also the Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada and a People's Deputy of Ukraine serving in the Social Democratic Party of Ukraine (united) faction. After a political crisis involving the president and the prime minister, Kravchuk resigned from the presidency, but ran for a second term as president in 1994. He was defeated by his former prime minister, Leonid Kuchma, who then served as president for two terms. Vitold Pavlovych Fokin ( uk, Віто́льд Па́влович Фо́кін; born 25 October 1932) is a Ukrainian retired politician who served as the first Prime Minister of Ukraine from the country's declaration of independence on 24 August 1991 until 1 October 1992. Previously, he served as Prime Minister of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic from 23 October 1990 to 24 August 1991. Fokin graduated from the National Mining University of Ukraine in Dnipro. After Vitaliy Masol was forced to resign, Fokin was appointed Head of the Council of Ministers of the Ukrainian SSR on 17 October 1990. Valentyn Symonenko
Valentyn Kostyantynovych Symonenko ( uk, Валентин Костянтинович Симоненко; born July 4, 1940, in Odesa) is a Ukrainian politician and former Soviet Communist Party functionary. Between 1996 and 2011 he was chairman of the Accounting Chamber of Ukraine. In 1983-1992 he served as mayor of Odesa, then as the First Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine in the Fokin government, and for period of 10 days in October 1992 (October 2–12) ex officio acted as a Prime Minister of Ukraine upon the resignation of Vitold Fokin and the appointment of Leonid Kuchma to the office. The flag of Ukraine ( uk, Прапор України, Prapor Ukrainy) consists of equally sized horizontal bands of blue and yellow. The blue and yellow bicolour first appeared during the 1848 Spring of Nations in Lemberg, then part of the Austrian Empire. It was adopted as a state flag for the first time in the aftermath of the Russian Revolution by the Ukrainian People's Republic, the West Ukrainian People's Republic and the Ukrainian State. It was also later adopted by Carpatho-Ukraine in March 1939. When Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union, the flag of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic was used and the bicolour was banned. During the dissolution of the Soviet Union, the bicolour gradually returned in use before officially being adopted again on 28 January 1992 by the Ukrainian parliament.
