1992 Grand Prix Motorcycle Racing Season
The 1992 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season was the 44th F.I.M. Road Racing World Championship season. Honda secured the constructor's title in all three categories. Season summaries 500cc summary Wayne Rainey won the 1992 World Championship for the third consecutive year on a Kenny Roberts Marlboro Yamaha, however he was largely outshone by a dominant Michael Doohan on his Rothmans Honda, and was only prevented from winning what would have been his first world title by injury. Doohan won the first four opening rounds, the first he nearly didn't qualify for, due to tricky conditions in Suzuka, but ended up winning as Rainey crashed out in the rain. Rainey followed Doohan home in second in the following three races, still not fully fit due to a broken femur he had suffered at the end of the 1991 season. The Fédération Internationale de Motocyclisme (FIM; en, International Motorcycling Federation) is the global governing/sanctioning body of motorcycle racing. It represents 116 national motorcycle federations that are divided into six regional continental unions. There are seven motorcycle-racing disciplines that FIM covers, encompassing 82 world championships as well as hundreds of secondary championships: enduro, trial, circuit racing, motocross and supermoto, cross-country, e-bike, and track racing. Rothmans International plc was a British tobacco manufacturer. Its brands included Rothmans, Player's and Dunhill. Kevin Schwantz
Kevin Schwantz (born June 19, 1964) is an American former professional motorcycle road racer. He was the world champion of the 1993 FIM Road Racing World Championship. Early life Schwantz, whose parents owned a motorcycle shop, learned to ride at the age of four. He began his competitive career as a trials rider, following his father and Uncle, Darryl Hurst (the original 34), in that sport. From trials, he progressed to motocross in his teens, becoming a top regional MX racer. After a serious crash in qualifying for the Houston Supercross in 1983, he decided to quit motocross. Career At the end of the 1984 season, he was offered a test ride with the Yoshimura Suzuki Superbike team, who promptly signed the Texan to a contract. The 1992 Italian motorcycle Grand Prix was the fifth race of the 1992 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 22–24 May 1992 at the Mugello Circuit. 500 cc race report Wayne Gardner, back from injuries, crashed in practice and missed the race. Mick Doohan got the lead at the start and it became a 3-man battle between him, Kevin Schwantz and Wayne Rainey. 1992 Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix
The 1992 Spanish motorcycle Grand Prix was the fourth round of the 1992 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 8–10 May 1992 at the Jerez circuit. 500 cc race report Mick Doohan was on pole, and got the lead at the start from Wayne Rainey and Kevin Schwantz. Doohan then opened a gap to Rainey, who in turn had a gap to a fight for 3rd between Schwantz and Àlex Crivillé. Crivillé retired and Niall Mackenzie went up to 3rd. Niall Mackenzie
Niall Macfarlane Mackenzie (born 19 July 1961) is a Scottish former professional motorcycle road racer. Career Mackenzie, who hails from Fankerton, near Denny, Stirlingshire; won the British Superbike Championship three times from 1996 to 1998 with the Rob McElnea-run Yamaha team, and the British 250cc and 350cc titles twice earlier in his career. He had a long career in the Grand Prix motorcycle racing circuit, debuting in 1984 in the 250cc class. He moved up to the 500cc class in 1986 on a Suzuki before spells on Honda and Yamaha motorcycles. He was 4th in the championship in 1990, and finished in the top 10 in the championship on five other occasions. His final racing season was the 2000 British Superbike series, although he did a farewell one-off at Knockhill in 2001 and stood in for the injured Yukio Kagayama at Donington Park in 2003. 1992 Malaysian Motorcycle Grand Prix
The 1992 Malaysian motorcycle Grand Prix was the third round of the 1992 Grand Prix motorcycle racing season. It took place on the weekend of 17–19 April 1992 at the Shah Alam Circuit. 500 cc race report Kevin Schwantz injured his hand in practice and missed the race. Mick Doohan was on pole and got the lead at the start from Àlex Crivillé and Wayne Rainey. Then Doohan got a small gap while Rainey moved into 2nd. Rain brought out a red flag; 18 laps for a second leg in intermediate conditions. After one or two laps, Doohan was again at the front, followed by Juan Garriga. Àlex Crivillé Tapias (born 4 March 1970) is a Spanish former Grand Prix motorcycle road racer. In 1992 he became the first Spaniard to win a 500cc Grand Prix and, in 1999 he became the first Spaniard to win the 500cc World Championship. Biography Crivillé was born in Barcelona, Catalonia. He falsified his age in order to start racing at 14 in 1985, the minimum age for a license being 15 in Spain. In that year he won the Criterium Solo Moto, a national series for 75 cc Honda streetbikes. 80cc career Derbi (1987–1988) ;1987 Crivillé started his international career in the now-defunct 80cc World Championship with the Derbi team. Wayne Michael Gardner (born 11 October 1959) is an Australian former professional Grand Prix motorcycle and touring car racer. His most notable achievement was winning the 1987 500 cc Motorcycle World Championship, becoming the first Australian to win motorcycling's premier class.
