Bedford Borough Council
Bedford Borough Council is the local authority of the Borough of Bedford in Bedfordshire, England. It is a unitary authority, having the powers of a non-metropolitan county and district council combined. The executive of the council is the directly elected mayor of Bedford. It is a member of the East of England Local Government Association. The council was founded in 1974 as Bedford District Council, being renamed North Bedfordshire Borough Council in 1975. In 1992 it changed its name again to become Bedford Borough Council. Until 2009 it was a lower-tier district council, with county-level services provided by Bedfordshire County Council. On 1 April 2009, the Bedfordshire County Council Bedfordshire County Council was the county council of the non-metropolitan county of Bedfordshire in England. 1992 United Kingdom Local Elections
Local elections were held in the United Kingdom on 7 May 1992, one month after the general election which returned the governing Conservative Party for a fourth consecutive term in office. The Conservatives won back some ground that they had lost the previous year. The Conservative Party gained 303 seats, bringing their number of councillors to 8,288. Their share of the vote was projected to be 46%, their highest for many years. The main opposition Labour Party lost 402 seats and were left with 9,102 councillors. Their projected share of the vote was 30%, their lowest since 1982. Neil Kinnock was still party leader at this stage, although he had already declared his intention to resign from the position as soon as a new leader was elected; his successor was John Smith, who won the leadership contest against Bryan Gould on 18 July 1992. Ian Luder
Ian David Luder (born 1951) was the 681st Lord Mayor of London, serving from 2008 to 2009. Biography Born into a Jewish family as the son of a mathematics teacher, Luder attended The Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School, Elstree before reading Economics and Economic History at University College London (BA). He then worked as a tax accountant for Arthur Andersen and later Grant Thornton. He regularly comments on tax matters and helped to found the Worshipful Company of Tax Advisers, and is a liveryman of the Coopers' Company. He entered local government as a Labour councillor on Bedford Borough Council, serving for 23 years. Luder also stood for Parliament as the Labour candidate for Yeovil in 1979. Luder was Aldermanic Sheriff of London for 2007–08 and was elected Lord Mayor on 29 September 2008, taking office in the "Silent Ceremony" on 7 November.
