These are the official results of the Men's High Jump event at the 1991 IAAF World Championships in Tokyo, Japan. High Jump
The high jump is a track and field event in which competitors must jump unaided over a horizontal bar placed at measured heights without dislodging it. In its modern, most-practiced format, a bar is placed between two standards with a crash mat for landing. Since ancient times, competitors have introduced increasingly effective techniques to arrive at the current form, and the current universally preferred method is the Fosbury Flop, in which athletes run towards the bar and leap head first with their back to the bar. The discipline is, alongside the pole vault, one of two vertical clearance events in the Olympic athletics program. It is contested at the World Championships in Athletics and the World Athletics Indoor Championships, and is a common occurrence at track and field meets. The high jump was among the first events deemed acceptable for women, having been held at the 1928 Olympic Games. Håkon Särnblom
Håkon Särnblom (born 3 March 1966) is a retired Norwegian high jumper. He represented IK Tjalve and IF Minerva during his active career. He finished tenth at the 1988 European Indoor Championships, fourteenth at the 1990 European Indoor Championships, sixth at the 1994 European Indoor Championships, fourth at the 1994 European Championships and tenth at the 1995 IAAF World Indoor Championships. He competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics as well as the World Championships in 1991 and 1995 without reaching the finals. He became Norwegian champion in the years 1986, 1988-1990 and 1992. Särnblom made a brief comeback at the 2006 Norwegian championships, representing Haugesund IL, but failed to clear his opening height at the competition. His personal best jump was 2.31 metres, achieved in August 1994 in Helsinki. This makes him the second best high jumper in Norwegian history after Steinar Hoen. Steinar Hoen
Steinar Hoen (born 8 February 1971) is a retired Norwegian high jumper. He represented IK Tjalve during his senior career. He has been the meeting director for the Bislett Games since 2007. His indoor and outdoor bests are both 2.36 m – these are also the Norwegian records for the event. Career In his early career he finished eleventh at the 1990 World Junior Championships, fourteenth at the 1991 World Championships, ninth at the 1992 European Indoor Championships and ninth at the 1993 IAAF World Indoor Championships. He competed at the 1992 Summer Olympics together with Håkon Särnblom without reaching the finals. In 1994 he finished fourth at the European Indoor Championships before winning the European Championships in August with a jump of 2.35 metres. Patrik Sjöberg
Jan Niklas Patrik Sjöberg (; born 5 January 1965) is a Swedish former high jumper. He broke the world record with in Stockholm on 30 June 1987. This mark is still the European record and ranks him third on the world all-time list behind Javier Sotomayor and Mutaz Essa Barshim. He twice held the world indoor record holder with marks of 2.38 m (1985) and 2.41 m (1987). He was the 1987 World Champion and three-times an Olympic medallist. Early life Sjöberg was born in Gothenburg, Västra Götaland and was a member of the Örgryte IS club. Career Sjöberg has a gold medal from the World Championships in Rome 1987 and has three Olympic medals: silver medals from Los Angeles 1984 and Barcelona 1992, and a bronze medal from Seoul 1988. Javier Sotomayor
Javier Sotomayor Sanabria (; born October 13, 1967) is a Cuban retired track and field athlete, who specialized in the high jump and is the current world record holder. The 1992 Olympic champion, he was the dominant high jumper of the 1990s; his personal best of makes him the only person ever to have cleared eight feet (2.44 m). Sotomayor is a two-time gold medallist at the IAAF World Championships in Athletics, and also won two silver medals at the competition. At the IAAF World Indoor Championships he won four gold medals between 1989 and 1999. In addition, he won three straight titles at the Pan American Games from 1987 to 1995. He is regarded as the best high jumper of all time. Artur Jerzy Partyka (born 25 July 1969 in Stalowa Wola, Poland) is a former Polish high jumper and two-time Olympic medalist. He won twelve national titles in a row, starting in 1989. He represented ŁKS Łódź. His father is Algerian, his mother is Polish. He was one of the leading high jumpers of the 1990s. Partyka is one of only 21 competitors to clear the height of 2.38 metres or more. With that height he set the Polish record in high jump. Hollis Conway (born January 8, 1967) is a track and field high jumper and a two-time Olympic medalist. He is currently employed by Lafayette Consolidated Government as the PARC Director in Lafayette Mayor-President Josh Guillory's administration. Conway previously served as the assistant director of Diversity, Leadership, & Education for the Louisiana Ragin' Cajuns football team under head coach Billy Napier.
