1991 World Archery Championships
The 1991 World Archery Championships was the 36th edition of the event. It was held in Krakow, Poland on 19–24 August 1991 and was organised by World Archery Federation (FITA). It marked the last time the Soviet Union competed in the World Championships. World Archery Championships
The World Archery Championships are a series of competitions in Archery organised by the World Archery Federation (WA). The first competition held under that title took place in 1931. Competition archery takes a wide variety of formats, but the title World Championships is commonly reserved for the following three events: # Outdoor World Championships in target Archery # Indoor World Championships in target Archery # World Championships in field Archery. Of these, the Outdoor World Championships in target Archery is most commonly referred to as simply the 'World Archery Championships', and the winners most commonly referred to as simply "world champions". Events in those outdoor championships are held involving fixed targets at set distances, using a variety of bows, the recurve bow from 1931 and the compound bow since 1995. The World Archery Federation (WA, also and formerly known as FITA from the French ''Fédération Internationale de Tir à l'Arc'') is the governing body of the sport of archery. It is based in Lausanne, Switzerland. It is composed of 156 national federations and other archery associations, and is recognised by the International Olympic Committee. History FITA was founded on 4 September 1931 in Lwow, Poland (today Lviv, Ukraine). Its seven founding member states were France, Czechoslovakia, Sweden, Poland, the United States, Hungary, and Italy. The aim of the organization was to create regular archery championships, and to return archery to the Olympic Games (the sport had not been featured since 1920). FITA was finally successful in returning archery to the Olympic program in the 1972 Summer Olympics. Simon Fairweather
Simon John Fairweather, OAM (born 9 October 1969) is an archer born in Adelaide, South Australia. He is tall and weighs . Fairweather won the individual gold medal at the World Championships in Poland in 1991. Fairweather was declared the Young Australian of the Year in 1991. After an early Olympic career in which he was generally considered not to have lived up to his promise, Fairweather shot back into Australia's national consciousness, "stopping the nation" with his gold-medal performance in men's individual archery at the 2000 Summer Olympics. He was also a member of the Australian team which finished twelfth in the team competition. Simon went to 5 Olympic Games: 1988, 1992, 1996, 2000, 2004. Kim Soo-nyung
Kim Soo-nyung (born April 5, 1971 in Chungcheongbuk-do) is a former member of the South Korean Olympic archery team in 1988, 1992, and 2000. She has earned a total of four gold medals at the Olympics, one for the individual event in 1988 and three for the team event in 1988, 1992 and 2000. She won a further silver medal in 1992 and a bronze in 2000, both for the individual events. She retired after the 1992 Olympics to marry and raise two children, resuming her training in 1999, in the lead up to the 2000 Summer Olympics. She competed at the 1986 Asian Games winning a gold medal in the team event and a bronze in the individual. She also won two consecutive individual and team world championships in 1989 and 1991. Zehra Öktem
Zehra Öktem (born September 4, 1959 in Trabzon, Turkey) is a Turkish female Olympian archer. She resides in Antalya. She graduated from Istanbul Technical University with a degree in chemical engineering. Öktem became a member of the national team at the age of 30. In the 1990s, she won five times (1990, 1991, 1992, 1994 and 1998) the gold medal at the Balkan Championship. Zehra Öktem represented Turkey at the 1992 Summer Olympics and placed 30th in the Individual round of 32 event. Lastly, she took two gold medals at the 2009 World Masters Games in Sydney, Australia in individual field and indoors. At the same tournament, Öktem set also a world record in 30m event of her age category (over 50 years) with a score of 345.
