1991 UK Championship
The 1991 UK Championship was a professional Snooker world rankings, ranking snooker tournament that took place between 23 November and 1 December 1991 at the Preston Guild Hall, Guild Hall in Preston, Lancashire, Preston, England. The televised stages were shown on BBC. The highest break of the televised stages was 142 made by Martin Clark (snooker player), Martin Clark and the same for the non-televised stages was 137 made by Mark Bennett (snooker player), Mark Bennett. John Parrott won his first and only UK Championship by defeating Jimmy White 16–13 in the final. UK Championship
The UK Championship is a professional ranking snooker tournament. It is one of snooker's prestigious Triple Crown events, along with the World Championship and the Masters. It is usually held at the Barbican Centre, York. Ronnie O'Sullivan has won the tournament a record seven times, followed by Steve Davis with six titles and Stephen Hendry with five. Mark Allen is the reigning champion, winning his first title in 2022. History The UK Championship was first held in 1977 in Tower Circus, Blackpool as the United Kingdom Professional Snooker Championship, an event open only to British residents and passport holders. Patsy Fagan won the inaugural tournament by defeating Doug Mountjoy by 12 frames to 9 in the final and won the first prize of £2000. The following year the event moved to the Guild Hall, Preston, where it remained until 1997. Wayne Jones (snooker Player)
Wayne Jones (born 24 December 1959) is a former Welsh professional snooker player. He won the Welsh Amateur snooker championship in 1983 by defeating Terry Parsons in the final, and turned professional in 1984. Despite never breaking into the top 16, he reached the last 16 and quarter-finals of many ranking events. His most notable run was to the final of the 1989 Classic with victories over the likes of Jimmy White, where he lost to Doug Mountjoy 11–13, despite at one stage leading 11–9. Warren King (snooker Player)
Warren King (born 1 April 1955) is a former professional Australian snooker player who was active during the 1980s and 1990s. He reached his highest ranking position, 35th, for the 1985/1986 season, and was the runner-up in the 1990 Classic, where he lost 6–10 to Steve James. In 1994 King made the first 147 break in a tournament in Australia and in doing so became the first Australian to make a 147 break in a tournament. Life and career King lived in Granville, New South Wales during his childhood. He was the Australian amateur snooker champion in 1980 and 1981. He turned professional in 1982. Neal Foulds
Neal Foulds (born 13 July 1963) is an English former professional snooker player and six-time tournament winner, including the 1986 International Open, the 1988 Dubai Masters and the 1992 Scottish Masters, as well as the invitational Pot Black in 1992. He was the runner up for the UK Championships in 1986, the British Open in 1987 and reached the semi finals of the Masters on three occasions, as well as the World Championship. After his retirement, Foulds became a commentator for the BBC and is currently part of the presenting team for ITV and Eurosport. Career The son of snooker professional Geoff Foulds, he began playing the game at the age of 11 and by the early 1980s was already one of the strongest players in his area. Barry West
Barry West (24 October 1958 – 15 December 2022) was an English professional snooker player. Biography West was born on 24 October 1958, and became a professional snooker player in 1985. He reached the last 32 of a ranking tournament on fifteen occasions, the last 16 five times, and progressed to three quarter-finals. In the 1985 UK Championship, West lost 9–1 in the quarter-final to Steve Davis; the 1988 International Open finished in a 5–2 loss to Jimmy White, and the UK Championship of that year ended for West with a 9–5 defeat to Terry Griffiths. Tony Drago
Tony Drago (born 22 September 1965) is a Maltese former professional snooker and pool player. Known for his speed around the table, during his snooker career he won two professional titles: the 1993 Strachan Challenge Event 3 and the 1996 Guangzhou Masters. He later switched his focus to pool and won the 2003 World Pool Masters beating Hsia Hui-kai 8–6 and the 2008 Predator International 10-ball Championship beating Francisco Bustamante 13–10. Stuart Reardon (snooker Player)
Stuart Reardon (born 1969) is an English former professional snooker player. Career Born in 1969, Reardon turned professional in 1991. His debut season featured a run to the last 32 of the 1992 Asian Open, where he lost 4–5 to Steve Campbell, and the last 64 at both the 1991 UK Championship - losing to Gary Wilkinson 5–9 having led 5–3 - and the 1992 British Open, where he was defeated 5–1 by Nigel Bond. Gary Wilkinson (snooker Player)
Gary Wilkinson (born 7 April 1966) is an English former professional snooker player. Career Wilkinson turned professional in 1987. In 1988, he won the non-ranking WPBSA Invitation Event beating Alex Higgins 5–4 in the final. He climbed the rankings to reach the no. 5 spot in the world within four seasons. One of his career highlights was at the 1989 UK Championship, where he led John Parrott 7–0 and 8–1 in their Last 16 match before falling over the line at 9–6, then whitewashing Jimmy White 9–0 in the quarter finals, and then leading world number 1 Steve Davis 4–0, 6–2 and 8–7 in the semi finals, before Wilkinson misread the score thinking that Davis didn't need snookers and went for a risky shot. Stefan Mazrocis
Stefan Mazrocis (born 18 April 1967) is a Dutch-English former professional snooker player. He was born of Latvian and English parentage, and spent his early life in Leicester, England. Career Mazrocis turned professional in 1991. In 1995, he qualified for the main stages of the World Championship at the Crucible Theatre, defeating Lee Walters, Martin Dziewialtowski, Jason Prince, Scott MacFarlane and Mark Bennett; drawn against incumbent champion Stephen Hendry in the last 32, he lost 3–10. Steve Newbury
Steve Newbury (born 21 April 1956) is a former Welsh professional snooker player from Neath. As an amateur, Newbury won the 1979 National Pairs Championship (with Cliff Wilson), and the 1980 Welsh Amateur Championship. Rod Lawler
Rod Lawler (born 12 July 1971) is an English professional snooker player. He is noted for his slow playing style which gave rise to his nickname, "Rod the Plod". After turning professional in 1990, Lawler has reached one ranking tournament final—the 1996 International Open—where he lost 3–9 to John Higgins, and has won one minor-ranking tournament – Event 3 of the 2012/2013 Players Tour Championship – where he defeated Marco Fu 4–2 in the final.
