1991 Pittsburg State Gorillas Football Team
The 1991 Pittsburg State Gorillas football team was an American football team that won the 1991 NCAA Division II national championship. The team represented Pittsburg State University as a member of the Missouri Athletic Association (MIAA) during the 1991 NCAA Division II football season. In their second season under head coach Chuck Broyles, the Gorillas compiled a 13–1–1 record (8–0–1 against conference opponents), won the MIAA championship, and outscored opponents by a total of 555 to 226. They qualified to participate in the Division II playoffs and advanced to the national championship game, defeating Jacksonville State by a 23–6 score. It was Pittsburg State's third national championship. Wide receiver and return specialist Ronnie West received the Harlon Hill Trophy as the best player in Division II football. The Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) is a List of NCAA conferences, college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the NCAA Division II, Division II level, headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri. Its fourteen member institutions, located in Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, and Oklahoma, include twelve public and two private schools. Commerce is a city in Hunt County, Texas, United States, situated on the eastern edge of North Texas, in the heart of the Texas Blackland Prairies. The town is south of the Texas/Oklahoma border. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) is a nonprofit organization that regulates student athletics among about 1,100 schools in the United States, Canada, and Puerto Rico. Pittsburg State Gorillas Football Seasons
This is a list of Pittsburg State Gorillas football season records. The Pittsburg State Gorillas football team is the football team of Pittsburg State University, located in the American city of Pittsburg, Kansas. The team competes as a Mid-America Intercollegiate Athletics Association (MIAA) at the NCAA Division II level. In the program's beginning, the team was known as the Normals, but that changed in the early 1920s when the student body voted to be nicknamed the Gorillas. Since 1924, Pittsburg State's football team has played in Carnie Smith Stadium, named after the seventh head coach at Pittsburg State.
