1991 Jacksonville State Gamecocks Football Team
The 1991 Jacksonville State Gamecocks football team represented Jacksonville State University as a member of the Gulf South Conference (GSC) during the 1991 NCAA Division II football season. Led by seventh-year head coach Bill Burgess, the Gamecocks compiled an overall record of 12–1 with a mark of 6–0 in conference play, winning the GSC title. For the fourth consecutive season, Jacksonville State advanced to the NCAA Division II Football Championship playoffs, beating in the first round, in the quarterfinals, and in the semifinals before losing to Pittsburg State in the championship game. The Gulf South Conference (GSC) is a college athletic conference affiliated with the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the Division II level, which operates in the Southeastern United States. History Originally known as the Mid-South Athletic Conference or Mid-South Conference, the Gulf South Conference was formed by six universities in the summer of 1970: Delta State, Florence State (now North Alabama), Jacksonville State, Livingston (now West Alabama), Tennessee–Martin, and Troy State (now Troy). Scheduling problems for the 1970–71 academic year limited the league to football, won by Jacksonville State. In 1971, the league changed its name to the Gulf South Conference; added Southeastern Louisiana (SLU) and Nicholls State (increasing the membership to eight); opened an office in Hammond, Louisiana; and began championships in all men's sports. Jacksonville State Gamecocks Football Seasons
This is a list of seasons completed by the Jacksonville State Gamecocks football team of the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I Football Championship Subdivision (FCS). Jacksonville State's first football team was fielded in 1904. Jacksonville State originally competed as a football independent. In 1970, Jacksonville State dropped down to NCAA Division II and joined the Gulf South Conference, where they won a national championship in 1992. The Gamecocks moved to the Division I-AA's Southland Conference in 1996, before joining the Ohio Valley Conference in 2003. On November 5, 2021, the school accepted an invitation to join Conference USA (C-USA) of the NCAA Division I Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) beginning with the 2023 season.
