The following is a list of events relating to television in Ireland from 1991. Events *7 January – British children's animated fantasy series ''The Dreamstone'' premieres on Network 2. It had premiered in the UK during the previous year and four months. *30 January – Proceedings from the Dáil Éireann, the lower house of the Irish parliament are aired on a regular basis. *7 February – Séamus Brennan is appointed Minister for Tourism, Transport and Communications with responsibility for broadcasting. *26 March – Network 2 begins airing the popular French-Canadian children's television series ''Babar''. *18 April – American-French-Canadian animated series '' Inspector Gadget'' screens on Network 2 in its original English language for the very last time before resting. Television In Ireland
Television in the Republic of Ireland is available through a variety of platforms. The digital terrestrial television service is known as Saorview and is the primary source of broadcast television since analogue transmissions ended on 24 October 2012. Digital satellite (from Sky Ireland, Saorsat and other European satellite service providers are available) and digital cable (from Virgin Media Ireland) are also widely used. The Irish satellite fill-in service (Saorsat) is via Ka-Sat using the Irish KA band spot and has been available since June 2011. While many people receive their television via Saorview, which is broadcast by 2RN, more than half subscribe to multichannel television networks. The biggest single multichannel television network in Ireland is Sky Ireland, which broadcasts digital satellite television services. Satellite cities or satellite towns are smaller municipalities that are adjacent to a principal city which is the core of a metropolitan area. They differ from mere suburbs, subdivisions and especially bedroom communities in that they have municipal governments distinct from that of the core metropolis and employment bases sufficient to support their residential populations. Conceptually, satellite cities could be self-sufficient communities outside of their larger metropolitan areas.
