1991 Hemsworth By-election
The 1991 Hemsworth by-election was a parliamentary by-election held in England on 7 November 1991 for the House of Commons constituency of Hemsworth in West Yorkshire. The seat had become vacant upon the death on 14 September of the Labour Member of Parliament George Buckley, who had held the seat since the 1987 general election. The Labour candidate, Derek Enright, held the seat for his party. Hemsworth (UK Parliament Constituency)
Hemsworth is a constituency in West Yorkshire represented in the House of Commons since 1996 by Jon Trickett of the Labour Party. Constituency profile The constituency comprises former coal mining towns and villages that also provided some of the workforce for the manufacturing bases of the town of Barnsley to the south and cities of Wakefield and Leeds to the northwest. Many constituents still commute to these today. Edward Garnier
Edward Henry Garnier, Baron Garnier, (born 26 October 1952) is a British barrister and former Conservative Party politician in the United Kingdom. A former lawyer for ''The Guardian'' newspaper, Lord Garnier is on the socially liberal wing of his party and was the Member of Parliament (MP) for Harborough in Leicestershire from 1992 until 2017. He most recently served as Solicitor General for England and Wales from the election of 2010 until the 2012 ministerial reshuffle. He stood down from the House of Commons at the 2017 general election before entering the House of Lords in 2018. 1996 Hemsworth By-election
The 1996 Hemsworth by-election was a parliamentary by-election held in England on 1 February 1996 for the House of Commons constituency of Hemsworth in West Yorkshire. The vacancy was caused by the death of Hemsworth's Member of Parliament (MP), Derek Enright of the Labour Party. Enright, a former Member of the European Parliament (MEP) for Leeds, had held the seat since a by-election in 1991. The result was a Labour hold. The election saw the first contest by the Socialist Labour Party, ahead of the party's official formation. Based in nearby Barnsley, the organisation saved its deposit, with 5.4% of the vote. 1946 Hemsworth By-election
The 1946 Hemsworth by-election was a parliamentary by-election held in England for the British House of Commons constituency of Hemsworth on 22 February 1946. The seat had become vacant on the death of the Labour Member of Parliament George Griffiths, who had held the seat since a 1934 by-election. The Labour candidate, Horace Holmes, was returned unopposed. This was the last uncontested Parliamentary election to date outside Northern Ireland. During World War II, unopposed by-elections were common, since the major parties had agreed not to contest by-elections when vacancies arose in seats held by the other parties; contests occurred only when independent candidates or minor parties chose to stand, and the Common Wealth Party was formed with the specific aim of contesting war-time by-elections. 1934 Hemsworth By-election
A by-election was held for the British House of Commons constituency of Hemsworth on 17 May 1934. The seat had become vacant on the death of the Labour Member of Parliament Gabriel Price, who had held the seat since the 1931 general election. The Labour Party considered two candidates: Absalom Flavell, from South Kirkby, and George Griffiths, secretary and organiser of the Hemsworth Divisional Labour Party. While Flavell was supported by some affiliated bodies, he voluntarily withdrew, believing that Griffiths had stronger backing. The Independent Labour Party considered putting forward Isaac Burns, a local councillor and miner. The Conservative Party indicated that, if it did so, it would probably also put forward a candidate, hoping to take advantage of a split left-wing vote. Derek Enright
Derek Anthony Enright (2 August 1935 – 31 October 1995) was a Labour Party politician in the United Kingdom. Early life Born in Thornaby-on-Tees, North Riding of Yorkshire, he attended St. Michael's College on St John's Road, Leeds (which has since merged with Mount St Mary's Catholic High School), then a grammar school. He was educated at Wadham College, Oxford, gaining a BA in Classics and a DipEd, and worked as a school teacher of classics at The John Fisher School, a Roman Catholic grammar school in Purley, London from 1959 to 1967. He taught at St Wilfrid's Catholic High School in the 1970s, where he taught students to sing " Yellow Submarine" and "Ten Green Bottles" in Latin.
