Perth
Perth is the capital and largest city of the Australian state of Western Australia. It is the fourth most populous city in Australia and Oceania, with a population of 2.1 million (80% of the state) living in Greater Perth in 2020. Perth is part of the South West Land Division of Western Australia, with most of the metropolitan area on the Swan Coastal Plain between the Indian Ocean and the Darling Scarp. Gennadiy Sergeyevich Prigoda (russian: Геннадий Серге́евич Пригода; born 2 May 1965) is a former freestyle swimmer from Russia, who competed twice at the Summer Olympics first for the Soviet Union in 1988, and then for the Unified Team in 1992. The sprinter won four Olympic medals: two silver and two bronze. Prigoda trained at Armed Forces sports society in Kuibyshev. Thomas Michael Jager (born October 6, 1964) is an American former competition swimmer. He is five-time Olympic gold medalist in relay events, a two-time World Championship individual gold medalist for the 50-meter freestyle, and a former world record-holder in two events. Jager set the 50-meter freestyle world record on six occasions during his career. He held this record for over ten years from August 1989 to June 2000. Swimming career Jager attended the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), and swam for coach Ron Ballatore's UCLA Bruins swimming and diving team in National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) competition from 1983 to 1985. Karen Burton (born June 11, 1962) is an American former competition swimmer who specialized in long-distance freestyle and open water events. While competing in the 25-kilometer open-water event, she represented the United States at the 1998 World Aquatics Championships in Perth, Western Australia, and took a bronze medal in the 1991 World Aquatics Championships. In Open Water championships sponsored by USA Swimming, she placed first in six national open water swimming champion competitions, which included three 15 km (9.3-mile) races and one 25 km (15.5-mile) race. Shelley Taylor-Smith (born 3 August 1961) is a former Australian long-distance swimmer. Born in Perth, Western Australia, Taylor-Smith suffered from scoliosis, an abnormal curvature of the spine, throughout her school years. The condition required her to wear a back brace, although she was successful in national age group swimming competitions. While on a swimming scholarship to the University of Arkansas in the United States, the heavy training regime caused a lower-body paralysis. During her recovery, her coach noticed that her swimming improved at greater distances, and encouraged her to take up marathon swimming, a sport which would also allow her to avoid potentially back-damaging tumble turns. Taylor-Smith's first major achievement was breaking the world four-mile record in 1983. David O'Brien (born 28 January 1983) is a retired British swimmer, who specialized in freestyle events. He is a single-time Olympian (2004), a resident athlete of Team GB, and a member of Stirling Swimming Club, under head coach Chris Martin. O'Brien qualified for the men's 4×200 m freestyle relay, as a member of the British team, at the 2004 Summer Olympics in Athens. He finished sixth in the 200 m freestyle from the Olympic trials in Sheffield, posting a relay entry time of 1:51.12. Chad Hundeby (1970/1971 – June 12, 2021) was an American long-distance swimmer. As a child, he was a member of the Blue Buoy Swim School based in Southern California. In 1991, he won a gold medal in the men's 25 kilometres open water swimming event at the 1991 World Aquatics Championships. In 1994, he set the (then) world record for the fastest swim of the English Channel in a time of 7 h 17 mins. The previous record had stood since 1978, when Penny Lee Dean completed the swim in 7 h 40 mins.
