1991 Cork Corporation Election
An election to Cork City Council took place on 27 June 1991 as part of that year's Irish local elections. 31 councillors were elected from six local electoral areas (LEAs) for a five-year term of office on the electoral system of proportional representation by means of the single transferable vote (PR-STV). This term was extended twice, first to 1998, then to 1999. Cork City Council
Cork City Council ( ga, Comhairle Cathrach Chorcaí) is the authority responsible for local government in the city of Cork in Ireland. As a city council, it is governed by the Local Government Act 2001. Prior to the enactment of the 2001 Act, the council was known as Cork Corporation. The council is responsible for housing and community, roads and transportation, urban planning and development, amenity and culture, environment and the management of some emergency services (including Cork City Fire Brigade). The council has 31 elected members. Elections are held every five years and are by single transferable vote. The head of the council has the honorific title of Lord Mayor of Cork. The city administration is headed by a Chief Executive, Ann Doherty. Toddy O'Sullivan
Toddy O'Sullivan (8 November 1934 – 12 December 2021) was an Irish Labour Party politician who served for sixteen years as a Teachta Dála (TD) for constituencies in Cork, and for five years as a junior minister. He also served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1980 to 1981. Early life A native of the Barrack Street area in the south inner-city area of Cork, O'Sullivan was educated at Greenmount National School before becoming a postal clerk. Political career A member of Cork City Council, O'Sullivan was Lord Mayor of Cork for the 1980 to 1981 term. O'Sullivan first stood as a candidate for Dáil Éireann at the by-election on 7 November 1979 in the Cork City constituency, following the death of Labour TD Patrick Kerrigan. John Dennehy
John Dennehy (born 22 March 1940) is an Irish former Fianna Fáil politician. He was a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork South-Central constituency. Early life Dennehy was educated at Sharman Crawford Technical Institute and Cork College of Commerce. A fitter by trade, Dennehy spent most of his working life with Irish Steel in Haulbowline until he went full-time into politics. Career Dennehy was elected to Cork City Council for the South–West area in 1974 and subsequently re-elected at every election until he resigned from the council in 2003 due to the dual mandate rule. He was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1983 to 1984. Dan Boyle (born 14 August 1962) is an Irish Green Party politician and author who served as Deputy leader of Seanad Éireann from 2007 to 2011. Pearse Wyse
Pearse Wyse (2 March 1923 – 28 April 2009) was an Irish politician, a long-serving member of Fianna Fáil who was later an early member of the Progressive Democrats. He was born in Cork in 1923, son of John Wyse (or Wise), pawnbroker's clerk, and his wife Julia (née Cronin), a native of Macroom. Wyse was educated at Greenmount national school in Cork, and at Cork College of Commerce, where he trained as a bookbinder and paper cutter. He was employed at the Eagle Printing Works, where by the early 1960s he became works manager, and was a longstanding member of the Irish Bookbinders' and Allied Trades Union. He first held political office in 1960 when he was elected to Cork City Council. Jim Corr (politician)
James A. Corr (born 25 January 1934) is a former Irish Fine Gael politician who served as Lord Mayor of Cork from 1979 to 1980 and 1996 to 1997. He served as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the Cork South-Central (Dáil constituency), Cork South-Central from February 1982 to November 1982. Corr was a member of Cork City Council from 1973 to 2014. Denis Cregan
Denis Cregan (born 4 May 1940) is an Irish publican and former Fine Gael party politician from Cork, who served for 17 years as a senator. A former branch vice-president of the Irish Transport and General Workers' Union, Cregan was a long-standing member of Cork City Council from 1979 to 2009, and was Lord Mayor of Cork from 1991 to 1992. He had unsuccessfully contested the Cork South-Central constituency at the 1981 and February 1982 general elections. He stood in the 1982 Seanad elections, winning a seat on the Labour Panel, which he held until his defeat in the 1989 elections to the 19th Seanad Éireann. Kathleen Lynch (born 7 June 1953) is a former Irish Labour Party politician who served as Minister of State from 2011 to 2016.
