1991 Chicago Marathon
The 1991 Chicago Marathon was the 14th running of the annual marathon race in Chicago, United States and was held on October 27. The elite men's race was won by Brazil's Joseildo da Silva in a time of 2:14:33 hours and the women's race was won by Sweden's Midde Hamrin in 2:36:21. Background The 1991 Chicago Marathon was run without a title sponsor. The 1990 race had been sponsored by G. Heileman Brewing Company, but the race organizers decided they wanted the race to be known as the Chicago Marathon. As a result, the prize money was reduced from $30,000 in 1990 to $7,500 in 1991, plus two free airline tickets. The lack of prize money affected the quality of athletes that participated in the event, with the Chicago Tribune saying that the 1991 race had the weakest field since 1981. In the men's race, Richard Kaitany who came third at the 1990 Chicago Marathon and won the 1991 Houston Marathon was considered one of the favorites. Pacemaker (running)
A pacemaker or pacesetter, sometimes informally called a rabbit, is a runner who leads a middle- or long-distance running event for the first section to ensure a fast time and avoid excessive tactical racing. Pacemakers are frequently employed by race organisers for world record attempts with specific instructions for lap times. Some athletes have essentially become professional pacemakers. A competitor who chooses the tactic of leading in order to win is called a front-runner rather than a pacemaker. Pacemakers may be used to avoid the tactics of deception that are possible in competition by those who, for example, race away from the start line (and are likely to subsequently slow down), giving the other runners the impression that they are far behind. Ursula Noctor
Ursula Noctor (21 January 1965 – 4 April 1993) was an Irish long-distance runner, who was Irish national champion in the half marathon in 1992. She finished fourth at the 1991 and 1992 Chicago Marathons. Career Noctor was the course record holder for the Waterside Marathon. In 1982, she won the inaugural Cork Mini-Marathon. In 1987, Noctor came third at the 3,000 metres event at the Northern Irish Championships, competing as an athlete from the Republic of Ireland. In 1988, she won the 10,000 metres event at the Orlando Classic invitational meet. Noctor came third at the 1990 Columbus Marathon in a time of 2:39:26, winning $7,500. Noctor finished fourth at the 1991 Chicago Marathon. In 1992, Noctor won the Republic of Ireland's National Half Marathon Championship. Silvana Pereira (born 5 May 1965) is a Brazilian former middle distance running, middle and long-distance runner. Her personal best of 1:11:15 hours for the half marathon is the Brazilian records in athletics, Brazilian and List of South American records in athletics, South American record for the event. She was the 1500 m South American silver medallist in 1989 and was the 1993 South American champion in cross country. Greg Meyer (born September 18, 1955) is an American long-distance runner. Meyer's winning time for the 1983 Boston Marathon race was 2:09.00. He was the last American to win the Boston Marathon until 2014, and the last person born in America to win the Chicago Marathon until 2017. He set ten American road racing records and two world records, and won the River Bank Run, in his home town of Grand Rapids, seven times.
