1990 Volvo PGA Championship
The 1990 Volvo PGA Championship was the 36th edition of the Volvo PGA Championship, an annual professional golf tournament on the European Tour. It was held 25–28 May at the West Course of Wentworth Club in Virginia Water, Surrey, England, a suburb southwest of London. It was the first year in which the event was granted "flagship event" status of the European Tour by the Official World Golf Ranking. 1990 European Tour
The 1990 European Tour, titled as the 1990 Volvo Tour for sponsorship reasons, was the 19th official season of golf tournaments known as the PGA European Tour. The season was made up of 37 tournaments counting for the Order of Merit, and seven non-counting "Approved Special Events". The Order of Merit was won by Wales' Ian Woosnam for the second time, having previously won in 1987. Changes for 1990 There were several changes from the previous season, with the addition of the Atlantic Open, the Amex Med Open and the Austrian Open; and the promotion of the Murphy's Cup to full Order of Merit status. Before the official schedule was announced the Tenerife Open was dropped, but later returned in place of the cancelled Catalan Open. Tony Johnstone
Anthony Alastair Johnstone (born 2 May 1956) is a Zimbabwean professional golfer. Early life Johnstone was born in Bulawayo, Rhodesia. He attended Christian Brothers College. Professional career In 1979, Johnstone turned professional and has spent his career playing mainly on the Southern African Tour and the European Tour. He won six times in Europe and finished a career best seventh on the European Tour Order of Merit in 1992. His most prestigious win came at the 1992 British PGA Championship. He won seventeen times on the Southern African Tour and topped the tour's Order of Merit in 1988–89 and 1993–94. He has represented Zimbabwe in international competition many times. José Rivero
José Rivero (born 20 September 1955) is a Spanish professional golfer. Career He started his golf career as a caddie and turned professional in 1973. He was a full member of the European Tour from 1983 to 2001 and he won four European Tour events. He made the top fifteen on the Order of Merit five times, including a best of tenth in 1988. Rivero was a member of the first two winning European Ryder Cup teams after the inclusion of Continental European players, at The Belfry in 1985 and Muirfield Village in 1987. He represented Spain in the Alfred Dunhill Cup and the World Cup on many occasions, winning the latter in 1984 in partnership with José María Cañizares. Vicente Fernández (golfer)
Vicente Fernández (born 5 April 1946) is an Argentine golfer who has won more than 60 professional tournaments around the world. Fernández was born in Corrientes, Argentina. He turned professional in 1964 and was a regular competitor on the European Tour from the mid-1970s to the mid-1990s. He won four titles on the tour and had two top ten Order of Merit finishes, placing 6th in 1974 and 9th in 1975. He was sixteenth on the Order of Merit in 1992 at the age of 46. As a senior Fernández moved to the United States to play on the Senior PGA Tour (now the Champions Tour), where he has won four tournaments. Philip Walton
Philip Joseph Walton (born 28 March 1962) is an Irish professional golfer. Walton attended Oklahoma State University in the United States and played for Great Britain & Ireland in the Walker Cup in 1981 and 1983. According to Ronan Rafferty, Walton had the best handicap in the Republic of Ireland as an amateur. He turned professional in 1983 and spent many years on the European Tour, making the top one hundred on the Order of Merit every year from 1983 to 1998, with a best ranking of thirteenth in 1995. He has won three European Tour events and four Irish PGA Championships. Walton has represented Ireland or Great Britain & Ireland on many occasions. Johan Börje Ryström (born 13 January 1964) is a Swedish professional golfer. Ryström grew up in Köping. He started playing golf at age six and was a scratch golfer by age fifteen. in August 1986, Ryström won the Nordic Championship over 72 holes in Hvide Klit, Denmark. Later that year he represented Sweden at the Eisenhower Trophy in Caracas, Venezuela, finishing 4th with his team and 9th individually. Craig David Parry (born 12 January 1966) is an Australian professional golfer. He has been one of Australia's premier golfers since turning professional in 1985, and has 23 career victories, two of those wins being events on the PGA Tour; the 2002 WGC-NEC Invitational and the 2004 Ford Championship at Doral. Manuel Moreno (golfer)
Manuel Moreno (Buenos Aires, 1782 – íb., 1857) was an Argentine politician, brother of Mariano Moreno. He was one of the founders of the Federal Party in the province of Buenos Aires. Biography Manuel Moreno was born in Buenos Aires in 1781, and studied at "Real Colegio de San Carlos". He started to work in the colonial government by 1800, and joined his brother Mariano Moreno in his mission to London. However, Mariano died on board the ship, which inspired Manuel to write a biography of his life. He wrote them quickly, in order to be able to publish them in London, and used it as a force to promote the Revolution in Europe. He returned in 1813, and was appointed as state secretary by the Second Triumvirate. In 1817, he was jailed and banished to the United States, where he graduated in medicine at the Maryland university. Barry Douglas Lane (21 June 1960 – 31 December 2022) was an English professional golfer. He won five official European Tour events between 1988 and 2004. He played in the 1993 Ryder Cup and won the inaugural Andersen Consulting World Championship of Golf in late 1995. After reaching 50 he had considerable success on the European Senior Tour, winning eight times between 2010 and 2019. Early life Lane was born in Hayes, Middlesex but grew up in Bracknell. Marc Farry
Marc-Antoine Farry (born 3 July 1959) is a French professional golfer. Farry was born in Paris, and started playing golf at the age of seven. He turned professional in 1979, and spent his early career as a teaching professional in Florida, United States. Farry was a full member of the European Tour from 1989 to 2004. He has won 16 tournaments on the French domestic tour, including the 1985 and 2000 French PGA Championships, but has only one win to his name on the European Tour, the 1996 BMW International Open, which was reduced to 36 holes because of rain. Rodger Miles Davis (born 18 May 1951) is an Australian professional golfer. Career Davis was born in Sydney. He turned professional in 1974 and spent his regular career playing mainly on the PGA Tour of Australasia and the European Tour. He won the PGA Tour of Australasia Order of Merit in 1990 and 1991. He made the top ten of the European Tour Order of Merit four times in the late 1980s and early 1990s.
