1990 San Jose Mayoral Election
The 1990 San Jose mayoral election was held to elect the mayor of San Jose, California. It saw an initial election held on June 5, 1990, followed by a runoff election on November 3, 1990 after no candidate managed to obtain a majority in the initial election. Susan Hammer
Susan Walker Hammer (December 21, 1938 – March 7, 2020) was an American politician and member of the Democratic Party, who served as the mayor of San Jose, California, from 1991 to 1999. She was voted best local politician six times. Previous to serving as mayor, she represented San Jose City Council District Three, which encompassed the downtown area of the city, from 1983 to 1991. Hammer was born in Altadena, California, on December 21, 1938. She attended the University of California, Berkeley. She was married to San Jose attorney Philip Hammer, and had three children and six grandchildren. Tom McEnery
Thomas Andrew McEnery (born September 23, 1945) is an American author, businessman, and teacher from San Jose, California, who served as the 61st mayor of that city from 1983 to 1991. McEnery attended Santa Clara University, graduating with a B.A. in 1967 and an M.A. in 1970. After his term in office, he served on the board of directors of the San Jose Sharks hockey team and continued to pursue his business and writing career. He co-founded San Jose Inside, a website devoted to the culture and politics of San Jose. McEnery was part of the ownership group for San Jose Sports & Entertainment Enterprises, which owns the San Jose Sharks of the National Hockey League. He is an owner of the Irish Innovation Center and Silicon Valley Global in Downtown San Jose which houses and funds start-up technology ventures. The two-round system (TRS), also known as runoff voting, second ballot, or ballotage, is a voting method used to elect a single candidate, where voters cast a single vote for their preferred candidate.
