1990 Laurier—Sainte-Marie Federal By-election
A by-election was held in the federal riding of Laurier—Sainte-Marie in Quebec on August 13, 1990, following the death of Liberal MP Jean-Claude Malépart. The by-election was held on the same day as another in Oshawa in Ontario. Laurier—Sainte-Marie is a federal electoral district in Downtown Montreal, Quebec, Canada, that has been represented in the House of Commons of Canada since 1988. Its population in 2016 was 111,835. Geography The district includes Côte Saint-Louis and the eastern parts of The Plateau and Mile End in the Borough of Le Plateau-Mont-Royal and the eastern part of Downtown Montreal and the western part of Centre-Sud (including part of the neighbourhood of Sainte-Marie) in the Borough of Ville-Marie. History In 1987, the district of "Laurier—Sainte-Marie" was created from Laurier, Montreal—Sainte-Marie and Saint-Jacques ridings. In 2003, Laurier—Sainte-Marie was abolished when it was redistributed into Laurier and Hochelaga ridings. After the 2004 election, Laurier riding was renamed "Laurier—Sainte-Marie" in 2004. By-elections to the 34th Canadian Parliament were held to fill vacancies in the House of Commons of Canada between the 1988 federal election and the 1993 federal election. The Progressive Conservative Party of Canada led a majority government for the entirety of the 34th Canadian Parliament, though their number did decrease from by-elections. Oshawa (formerly known as Oshawa—Whitby) is a federal electoral district in Ontario, Canada, that is represented in the House of Commons of Canada. It currently consists of the City of Oshawa south of Taunton Road. Historically, the riding was dominated by a working-class electorate. The riding was first created in 1966 from parts of what are now Oshawa and Whitby, and was very competitive for its first 2 elections. However, the riding quickly became a New Democratic Party (NDP) stronghold during the tenure of Ed Broadbent and the riding continued to be that way until the early 1990s. Jean-Claude Malépart
Jean-Claude Malépart (3 December 1938 – 16 November 1989) was a French Canadian politician. Born in Montreal, Quebec, the son of Charles-Auguste Malépart and Germaine Mérineau, Malépart was elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in the riding of Sainte-Marie in the 1973 election, after losing the 1970 election. He was defeated in the 1976 election. A member of the House of Commons of Canada representing the ridings of Sainte-Marie (later Montreal—Sainte-Marie), and Laurier—Sainte-Marie, he was elected in the 1979, 1980, 1984, and 1988 federal elections. A Liberal, he was the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Public Works from 1982 to 1984. His daughter Nathalie Malépart ran as the Liberal Party of Quebec candidate in a 2006 by-election in the riding of Sainte-Marie–Saint-Jacques. She lost to the Parti Québécois candidate, Martin Lemay.
