Triple Jump
The triple jump, sometimes referred to as the hop, step and jump or the hop, skip and jump, is a track and field event, similar to the long jump. As a group, the two events are referred to as the "horizontal jumps". The competitor runs down the track and performs a hop, a bound and then a jump into the sand pit. The triple jump was inspired by the ancient Olympic Games and has been a modern Olympics event since the Games' inception in 1896. According to World Athletics rules, "the hop shall be made so that an athlete lands first on the same foot as that from which he has taken off; in the step he shall land on the other foot, from which, subsequently, the jump is performed." Pierre Camara (born 15 September 1965) is a retired French triple jumper, best known for his triple jump gold medal at the 1993 World Indoor Championships. In the triple jump final of those championships, he jumped 17.59 m, which was a new championship record and a new French indoor record. Ralf Jaros (born 13 December 1965, in Düsseldorf) is a former German triple jumper. With a height of 1.93 m (6 ft 4 in), he had a competition weight of 85 kg (187 lb). On 30 June 1991, in the European Cup, Ralf Jaros set a German triple jump record of 17.66 meters (57 ft 11 in) while defeating the nearest competitor by nearly 72 cm (28 in). This remains the current national record in the event. At the age of 18, Ralf Jaros made his international debut in the 1984 Olympic Games. He finished in the seventeenth position in the qualification round. In the 1985 season, he finished fourth in the European Indoor Championships with a distance of 16.78 meters (55 ft 1 in), and sixth in the World Indoor Games with a distance of 16.61 meters (54 ft 6 in). Eugeniusz Bedeniczuk (6 January 1961 — 2 May 2023) was a Polish male triple jump, triple jumper, who represented his native country at the 1992 Summer Olympics in Barcelona, Spain. He set his personal best (17.08 m) in the men's triple jump event in 1992. John Alun Adolphus Herbert (born 20 April 1962) is an English former sportsperson, who represented Great Britain as both a triple jumper and a bobsledder. Competing in athletics, he won the gold medal for England in the triple jump at the 1986 Commonwealth Games in Edinburgh. He represented Great Britain at the 1984 Summer Olympics and 1988 Summer Olympics. Oleg Valeryevich Protsenko (russian: Олег Валерьевич Проценко; born 11 August 1963 in Soltsy, Novgorod, USSR) is a former Soviet athlete. He was one of the world's finest triple jumpers during the 1980s. However, his record at major championships was rather poor in comparison with his prowess at minor meets. Already a fine triple-jumper in 1983, Protsenko rocketed to the top of the year's lists in 1984 with 17.52m leap in 1984. Bad for him was that he was denied of competing at the Olympic Games in L.A. due to Soviet boycott. His winning triple jump at the Olympic boycott meet in Moscow of 17.46m was 20 cm longer than that of the Olympic champion in Los Angeles.
