Borders Regional Council
The Scottish Borders ( sco, the Mairches, 'the Marches'; gd, Crìochan na h-Alba) is one of 32 council areas of Scotland. It borders the City of Edinburgh, Dumfries and Galloway, East Lothian, Midlothian, South Lanarkshire, West Lothian and, to the south-west, south and east, the English counties of Cumbria and Northumberland. The administrative centre of the area is Newtown St Boswells. The term Scottish Borders, or normally just "the Borders", is also used to designate the areas of southern Scotland and northern England that bound the Anglo-Scottish border. Geography The Scottish Borders are in the eastern part of the Southern Uplands. The region is hilly and largely rural, with the River Tweed flowing west to east through it. Gilbert Edward George Lariston Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 6th Earl of Minto, (; 19 June 1928 – 7 September 2005) (nicknamed "Gibbie"), styled Viscount Melgund until 1975, was a Scottish peer. Background and life Lord Minto was the son of Victor Elliot-Murray-Kynynmound, 5th Earl of Minto and Marion Cook. He attended Eton and the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst, and served in the Scots Guards until 1958. In the 1955 Birthday Honours he was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE). He was an honorary lieutenant of the Royal Company of Archers (Queen's Bodyguard in Scotland). He served as a Justice of the Peace for Roxburghshire from 1961 onwards. He succeeded his father as Earl in 1975. He served as president of the South of Scotland Chamber of Commerce from 1980 to 1982, chair of the Scottish Council on Alcoholism (1973-1987), and a commissioner of the Local Government Property Commission (Scotland) from 1995-1998.
