1989–90 Calgary Flames Season
The 1989–90 Calgary Flames season was the Flames eighteenth season, and their tenth in Calgary. In defense of their first Stanley Cup championship, despite losing Lanny McDonald to retirement the Flames remained a dominant team on the ice, finishing atop the Smythe Division and the Campbell Conference for the third consecutive year, and 2nd overall in the NHL with 99 points - two points behind the Boston Bruins. The regular season success did not translate in the post season, however, as the Flames were stunned by the Los Angeles Kings in six games in the first round of the playoffs. The loss would begin a 15–year period of playoff frustration, as the Flames would not win another post season round until the 2003–04 season. Following the loss, the Flames fired head coach Terry Crisp, later replacing him with Doug Risebrough. Joe Frederick
Joe Frederick (born August 18, 1969) is an American former professional ice hockey right winger. Career Frederick was drafted 242nd overall by the Detroit Red Wings in the 1989 NHL Entry Draft and played for the Adirondack Red Wings of the American Hockey League between 1993 and 1995. Though he never managed to play in the National Hockey League, he did play in the 1995 World Championship for the United States. He later played in the International Hockey League for the next five seasons, playing for the Orlando Solar Bears, Phoenix Roadrunners, Chicago Wolves, Milwaukee Admirals, Manitoba Moose, Grand Rapids Griffins, Utah Grizzlies and Cleveland Lumberjacks. He also played seven games for HIFK in Finland's SM-liiga during the 1998–99 season. Dallas James Drake (born February 4, 1969) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey winger in the National Hockey League who last played for the Detroit Red Wings. Having played the beginning and end of his NHL career with Detroit, he won his first and only Stanley Cup championship in his final NHL season in 2008. Erik Nicklas Lidström (; born 28 April 1970) is a Swedish former professional ice hockey defenceman and current vice president of hockey operations for the Detroit Red Wings. He played 20 seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Detroit Red Wings, which he captained for the final six seasons of his career. He is widely regarded as one of the greatest defencemen in NHL history and nicknamed "The Perfect Human." Over his 20 NHL seasons, Lidström won four Stanley Cup championships, seven James Norris Memorial Trophies (awarded to the NHL's top defenceman), one Conn Smythe Trophy as the playoff most valuable player, and was voted into 12 NHL All-Star Games.
