The 1989–90 Buffalo Sabres season was the Sabres' 20th season in the National Hockey League. They finished the season with the third best record in the NHL. Alexander Mogilny
Alexander Gennadevich Mogilny (russian: Александр Геннадиевич Могильный; born February 18, 1969) is a Russian former professional ice hockey player and the current president of Amur Khabarovsk of the Kontinental Hockey League (KHL). He was the first National Hockey League (NHL) draftee to defect from the Soviet Union in order to play in North America. During his NHL career, Mogilny played for the Buffalo Sabres, Vancouver Canucks, Toronto Maple Leafs and New Jersey Devils. He tied for the NHL lead in goals in the 1992–93 season with 76, and became a member of the Triple Gold Club by winning the Stanley Cup in 2000 with New Jersey. Mark Astley (born March 30, 1969) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey defenceman. He was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres in the tenth round, 194th overall, of the 1989 NHL Entry Draft. Derek Plante
Derek John Plante (born January 17, 1971) is an American ice hockey coach and former professional ice hockey player. Plante played eight seasons in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Buffalo Sabres, Dallas Stars, Chicago Blackhawks and Philadelphia Flyers. He was a member of the 1999 Stanley Cup champion Dallas Stars. He was an assistant coach at the University of Minnesota-Duluth from 2010-2015 before returning to the program as Associate Head Coach in 2020, a position he holds to this day. Bill Pye (ice Hockey)
William Pye is an American ice hockey coach and former goaltender who was an All-American for Northern Michigan and helped the team win its first National Championship in 1991. Career Pye arrived in Marquette in the fall of 1987 and served as a backup to Mike Jeffrey in his freshman season. He took over the starting role at the start of his sophomore season and provided an immediate boost in goal. NMU went from 6th to 2nd in the WCHA and Pye led the Wilcats to their first WCHA Championship, capturing MVP honors. Northern Michigan wasn't able to make it out of the first round of the NCAA Tournament but the Buffalo Sabres had seen enough to select Pye in the 6th round of NHL Draft. Kenneth William Sutton (born November 5, 1969) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player. John Scott Thomas (born January 18, 1970) is an American former professional ice hockey right wing. He played 63 games in the National Hockey League with the Buffalo Sabres and Los Angeles Kings between 1992 and 2001.
