1989–90 British Basketball League Season
The 1989–90 BBL season was the third season of the British Basketball League (known as the Carlsberg League for sponsorship reasons) since its establishment in 1987. The season featured a total of just eight teams, playing 28 games each. Due to the low number of teams, the post-season play-offs featured only the top four teams from the regular season instead of the usual top eight finishers. The future of the league was in the balance due to the waning number of teams. Livingston folded, Crystal Palace and Hemel Hempstead Watford Royals both dropped to the National League and Glasgow Rangers moved back to Kingston. There was small consolation in the formation of a new club called London Docklands (formerly Tower Hamlets) which joined the league. British Basketball League
The British Basketball League (BBL) is a men's professional basketball league in Great Britain and represents the highest level of play in the countries. The league is contested by 10 teams from England and Scotland. There are no clubs however from Wales or Northern Ireland. The BBL runs three additional knockout competitions alongside the BBL Championship which are the BBL Cup, the BBL Trophy and the end-of-season BBL Play-offs. The BBL sits above the National Basketball League and the Scottish Basketball Championship which effectively form the second tier of British basketball. There is currently no automatic promotion or relegation between the English and Scottish leagues and the BBL because of the franchise system in use in the BBL although several clubs have been successful in making the step up from the EBL in recent years. Leicester Riders are a British professional basketball team and the oldest club in the British Basketball League (BBL). Established in 1967, the club have played in various locations around Leicestershire before moving to their current purpose-built home venue, the Morningside Arena, in 2016. Cheshire Jets
The Cheshire Phoenix are a professional basketball team based in Ellesmere Port, England. Founded in 1984, they are members of the British Basketball League and play their home games at the Cheshire Oaks Arena. From 1993 until 2015 the team was based in Chester, where they enjoyed their most success. Under previous ownership, the team was known as Cheshire Jets, but due to financial difficulties the franchise was withdrawn from the League in November 2012 and reformed as the Phoenix. Hemel Hempstead Royals
London Lions are a British professional basketball team based in Stratford, East London, England, and compete in the British Basketball League, the top tier of British basketball. The team was originally founded in 1977 as the Hemel Hempstead Lakers, and has previously been based in Hemel Hempstead, Watford and Milton Keynes. Brixton TopCats
Brixton TopCats is a British basketball club based in the Brixton area of London. Established in 1985, the Men's first team currently compete in the National Basketball League Division 2, and the Women's team compete in the Women's British Basketball League. The club is particularly notable for it's development programme, which has started the careers of Luol Deng, Ajou Deng and Ugonna Onyekwe in recent years. The TopCats are based at Brixton Recreation Centre and since 2009 have operated a partnership with London South Bank University. Worthing Bears
Brighton Bears was a British basketball team based in Brighton, Sussex. From 1984 to 1999 the club was known as the Worthing Bears and was based in the town of Worthing, 12 miles west of Brighton. The Bears played in the top-flight British Basketball League (BBL) until 2006 when the franchise folded. The final season was notable for the signing of former NBA star Dennis Rodman, who played three games for the Bears. Clyde Vaughan
Clyde Vaughan (born in Mount Vernon, New York, United States) is a basketball coach and former professional player, who enjoyed a distinguished career at college level and professional level and international level for the England team. He was also selected as the 117th pick in 1984 NBA draft by the Indiana Pacers but never appeared in the NBA. The 6 foot 4 small forward played college basketball for the Pittsburgh Panthers. Though he only played his last two seasons in the Big East Conference, they were the best two seasons of his career. As a junior, he averaged 21.9 ppg and grabbed 9.2 rpg. His 22.0 ppg average in conference led the league. As a senior, he added another 21.0 ppg and 8.3 rebounds. Paul Stimpson (born 1959) is a former English basketball player. Paul Stimpson gained over 120 senior international appearances for England and Great Britain. He captained England and represented his country on 112 occasions and is one of the most significant players to have played for the England men's national basketball team. At the age of 12 he started playing for Glyn Grammar School later joined the Crystal Palace junior team and played for Borough Road College.
