Steffi Graf defeated Martina Navratilova in the final, 6–4, 7–5, 2–6, 6–2 to win the singles tennis title at the 1989 Virginia Slims Championships. It was her second Tour Finals singles title. Stefanie Maria Graf ( , ; born 14 June 1969) is a German former professional tennis player. Widely regarded as one of the greatest tennis players of all time, she was ranked world No. 1 for a record 377 weeks and won 22 major singles titles, the second-most since the start of the Open Era in 1968 and the third-most of all-time. In 1988, Graf became the first tennis player to achieve the Golden Slam by winning all four major singles titles and the Olympic gold medal in the same calendar year. Raffaella Reggi
Raffaella Reggi (; born 27 November 1965) is a former professional tennis player from Italy. Career As a junior, Reggi won the Orange Bowl 16 and under in 1981. She was a member of the Continental Players Cup Team in 1982. Reggi won the mixed doubles title at the US Open in 1986, partnering Sergio Casal. She was a singles quarter-finalist at the French Open in 1987, and reached a career-high singles ranking of World No. 13 in 1988. One of the highlights of her career was winning the Italian Open in 1985. In 1985 she became the first Italian woman to win the Italian Open since Annelies Ullstein-Bossi won in 1950. Ullstein-Bossi, Reggi, and 2014 finalist Sara Errani are the only Italian women to reach the singles final of Italy's top tennis tournament since World War II. This article lists the appearances of all participants in the women's tennis singles WTA Finals since the tournament's inception in 1972. Since 2003, the tournament has pitted the top eight players on the WTA tour against each other in two groups in which they play three round-robin matches. Two players from each group advance to the semifinals, and the winners to the finals. Participants are listed in order of number of appearances. When there are more than eight players listed for any year since 2003, it is usually due to withdrawal by one or more players because of injury. "Conchita" MartÃnez Bernat (born 16 April 1972) is a Spanish former professional tennis player. She was the first Spaniard to win the women's singles title at The Championships, Wimbledon, Wimbledon, doing so in 1994 Wimbledon Championships – Women's singles, 1994.
