1989 UCLA Bruins Softball Team
The 1989 UCLA Bruins softball team represented the University of California, Los Angeles in the 1989 NCAA Division I softball season. The UCLA Bruins, Bruins were coached by Sharron Backus, who led her fifteenth season and Sue Enquist, in her first season, in an uncommonly used co-head coach system. The Bruins played their home games at Sunset Field and finished with a record of 48–4. They competed in the Pacific-10 Conference, where they finished first with a 18–2 record. The Bruins were invited to the 1989 NCAA Division I softball tournament, where they swept the 1989 NCAA Division I softball tournament#Regionals, West Regional and then completed a run through the 1989 NCAA Division I softball tournament#Women's College World Series, Women's College World Series to claim their fourth NCAA Women's College World Series Championship. Sharron Backus
Sharron Backus (born February 12, 1946) is a former softball player and coach. She played as a shortstop and third baseman on seven Amateur Softball Association national championship teams from 1961 to 1975. She served as the head softball coach at UCLA from 1975 to 1997 and led her teams to nine national collegiate softball championships. At the time of her retirement in 1997, she was the winningest college softball coach in the history of the sport. Backus has been inducted into both the National Softball Hall of Fame and the National Fastpitch Coaches Association Hall of Fame. Softball player Backus attended Cal State Fullerton and played for 15 years as a shortstop and third baseman in the Amateur Softball Association ("ASA") from 1961 to 1975. Jane Sanders Stadium, nicknamed "The Jane", is an outdoor softball stadium in Eugene, Oregon, United States. Located on the south side of the University of Oregon (UO) campus at 18th and University, it is the home field of the Oregon Ducks of the Pac-12 Conference. Robert C. "Bob" Sanders donated more than $16 million to build the stadium, a memorial to his late wife Jane Sanders, who had been a longtime fan of Ducks softball. Former Ducks softball coach Becky Sisley matched other donations, up to $200,000. The total cost of the stadium was $17.2 million.
