General elections were held in Tuvalu on 27 September 1989.Dieter Nohlen, Florian Grotz & Christof Hartmann (2001) ''Elections in Asia: A data handbook, Volume II'', p829 Bikenibeu Paeniu was elected Prime Minister following the elections and formed a five-member cabinet composed largely of opponents of the previous Prime Minister Tomasi Puapua. Campaign As there were no political parties, all candidates for the twelve seats ran as independents. The Nui constituency was contested by four members of the same family. Bikenibeu Paeniu was the only candidate in Nukulaelae and was elected unopposed. Results For the first time, a woman was elected, with Naama Maheu Latasi winning one of the seats on Nanumea. Tuvalu
Tuvalu ( or ; formerly known as the Ellice Islands) is an island country and microstate in the Polynesian subregion of Oceania in the Pacific Ocean. Its islands are situated about midway between Hawaii and Australia. Kokea Malua
Kokea Malua is a politician from Tuvalu. He has served in the Parliament of Tuvalu on numerous occasions representing the electorate of Nanumea. He served as a government minister and was appointed as the speaker of the Parliament from 1989 to 1993 during the 1st prime ministership of Bikenibeu Paeniu. He lost his seat in the run-off election in 1993, which was held because the earlier election in 1993 has produced a deadlock in the parliament. He was re-elect to parliament in the 1998 Tuvaluan general election. He was the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister for Natural Resources and the Environment as well as Home Affairs and Rural Development, during the second term of the prime ministership of Bikenibeu Paeniu (1998-1999). Elections In Tuvalu
Tuvalu elects a legislature on a national level. The Parliament of Tuvalu (''Palamene o Tuvalu'') has 16 members, elected for a four-year term in 8 double-seat constituencies. Tuvalu is a de facto non-partisan democracy since it does not have political parties. Vaitupu is the largest atoll of the nation of Tuvalu. It is located at 7.48 degrees south and 178.83 degrees east. There are 1,061 people (2017 Census) living on with the main village being Asau. Geography The island, which covers approximately , includes swamps, mangroves, a fringing coral reef, and a large lagoon. Nukufetau
Nukufetau is an atoll that is part of the nation of Tuvalu. The atoll was claimed by the US under the Guano Islands Act some time in the 19th century and was ceded in a treaty of friendship concluded in 1979 and coming into force in 1983. It has a population of 597 who live on Savave islet (2017 Census). In 1951 the school that was located on Motumua islet was transferred to Savave and became the government primary school for Nukufetau. It was named the Tutasi Memorial School in honour of its predecessor. Geography Nukufetau is an atoll with passages through the reef that allow large ships to enter and anchor in the lagoon. Tomu Sione
Sir Tomu Malaefone Sione (17 November 1941 – April 2016) was a political figure from the Pacific nation of Tuvalu. He worked as a journalist from 1962 to 1968, and held the post of radio announcer in the Broadcasting and Information Department of the administration of the Gilbert and Ellice Islands Colony (GEIC). He was the head of the southern Niutao clan. He was married to Segali. Member of Parliament Tomu Sione was first elected to represent the constituency of Niutao in the House of Assembly of the GEIC in 1970. He was re-elected in the 1971 Gilbert and Ellice Islands general election, and in the 1974 Gilbert and Ellice Islands general election.
