1989 North Down Borough Council Election
Elections to North Down Borough Council were held on 17 May 1989 on the same day as the other Local government in Northern Ireland, Northern Irish local government 1989 Northern Ireland local elections, elections. The election used four district electoral areas to elect a total of 24 Councillors#UnitedKingdom, councillors. Prior to the election three Ulster Unionist politicians, including George Green (politician), George Green, had defected to the Conservative Party in Northern Ireland. The election saw the Conservative presence in North Down doubling, with the Conservatives emerging as the single largest party on the council. North Down Borough Council
North Down Borough Council was a Local Council in County Down in Northern Ireland. It merged with Ards Borough Council in May 2015 under local government reorganisation in Northern Ireland to become North Down and Ards District Council. Its main town was Bangor, 12 miles east of Belfast with a population of approximately 68,000. The Council was headquartered in Bangor. Its secondary centre was the former Urban District of Holywood, 8 km northeast of Belfast with a population of approximately 10,000. Most of the remainder of a total population was in suburban villages along the southern shore of Belfast Lough. The area of the former Borough is heavily suburbanised, railway links with Belfast are good and the area has been the domain of Belfast commuters since the mid-19th century. Gordon Dunne
Gordon Dunne (4 April 1959 – 20 June 2021) was a Unionist politician from Northern Ireland representing the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP). Dunne was a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) from 2011 to 2021, representing North Down. Born in Enniskillen, County Fermanagh, Dunne was first elected to North Down Borough Council in the 1981 local elections representing the Holywood area. He was re-elected in 1985 and 1989. He lost his seat in the 1993 local elections but regained it in 1997 and sat on the council since then. He resigned from the assembly effective 9 June 2021 due to health reasons, and his son Stephen Stephen or Steven is a common English first name. Eileen Bell
Eileen Bell CBE (born 15 August 1943) is an Alliance Party politician from Dromara, Northern Ireland. She was a member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for North Down from 1998 to 2007, and is a former deputy leader of the Alliance Party. Early life Bell was born in Dromara and grew up in West Belfast. She was educated at the Dominican College, Belfast and the University of Ulster. She held a number of jobs including working in the Civil Service and later as Welfare Officer for the Community of the Peace People. Political career In 1986 she became General Secretary of the Alliance Party. Later in 1993 she won election to North Down Borough Council. She was later elected as one of two "top-up" members of the 1996 Northern Ireland Peace Forum and in the 1998 Northern Ireland Assembly elections won a seat in North Down. Roy Bradford
Roy Hamilton Bradford (7 July 1921 – 2 September 1998) was a Unionist politician in Northern Ireland and a government minister in both the Parliament of Northern Ireland and the 1973 Northern Ireland Assembly. Born in Ligoniel in Belfast, Bradford studied at the Royal Belfast Academical Institution and Trinity College Dublin, where he was elected a Scholar. Brian Wilson (Northern Ireland Politician)
Brian Wilson MLA (born 15 May, 1943) is a Northern Irish politician who was a member of North Down Borough Council for 34 years (1981–2015). He retired when local government was reformed. During this time he served as an Alliance member, Green Party and Independent. He was the first Green Party Councillor to be elected in Northern Ireland in 2005. Wilson served as the Green Party Northern Ireland’s Member of the Northern Ireland Assembly (MLA) for North Down from 2007 to 2011, and was the party’s first elected representative in the Assembly. Denny Vitty
Denny Vitty (born 1949) is a politician in Northern Ireland. Vitty was elected to Castlereagh Borough Council for the Democratic Unionist Party (DUP) in 1981, despite only taking 35 first preference votes, as he received transfers from Peter Robinson. He was then elected to the Northern Ireland Assembly, 1982, as a member of the Democratic Unionist Party for Belfast East - having won only 235 first preference votes. In 1989, Vitty stood down from Castlereagh Borough Council and was instead elected to North Down Borough Council, In 1991, he served as the Mayor of North Down.
