1989 NBL Finals
The 1989 NBL Finals was the championship series of the 1989 season of Australia's National Basketball League (NBL) and the conclusion of the season's playoffs. The North Melbourne Giants defeated the Canberra Cannons in two games (2-0) for their first NBL championship. Format The 1989 National Basketball League Finals started on 20 September and concluded on 20 October. The playoffs consisted of two best of three Elimination finals, two best of three Semi-finals and the best of three game Grand Final series. As the two top teams at the end of the regular season, the North Melbourne Giants and Canberra Cannons both qualified for home court advantage during the Semi-finals. Adelaide 36ers
The Adelaide 36ers, also known as the Sixers, are an Australian professional men's basketball team in the National Basketball League (NBL). The 36ers are the only team in the league representing the state of South Australia and are based in the state's capital of Adelaide. The club was originally called the Adelaide City Eagles when they joined the NBL in 1982, but changed their name to the 36ers the following year. The 36ers nickname comes from the fact that the Colony of South Australia was officially proclaimed on 28 December 1836. Since 2019, the 36ers play their home games at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre. The 36ers' tally of four championships is equal with the New Zealand Breakers and Sydney Kings, and third only behind Melbourne United (six) and the Perth Wildcats (ten) as the most by any club in the NBL's history. Al Green (basketball)
Al Green (born 3 September 1953) is an American-Australian former professional basketball player. He played college basketball for three different colleges and was drafted by the Phoenix Suns in 1979. He arrived in Australia in 1981 and had a successful career in the National Basketball League (NBL) until his retirement in 1993. He won two NBL championships in 1982 and 1984, and was the NBL Most Valuable Player in 1982. Early life and college Green was born in New York City and grew up in South Bronx. He attended Maine Central Institute in Pittsfield, Maine, where he was a third-team ''Parade'' All-American selection in 1974. Eric Watterson (born 30 June 1964) is an Australian former professional basketball player who played 11 seasons in the National Basketball League (NBL) for the Perth Wildcats. Challenge Stadium
Perth Superdrome, known as HBF Stadium under a commercial naming rights arrangement, is a sports complex in Perth, Western Australia. It is home to the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS). The venue is located in the suburb of Mount Claremont, approximately west of Perth's central business district. The complex was opened in 1986. It received its current name through a naming-rights sponsorship deal with the HBF Health Fund in 2014. Although the previous sponsorship with Challenge Bank expired in 2002, the Challenge Stadium name remained in use until 2014. Facilities include an Olympic-standard aquatic centre with five pools, a diving tower, gymnasium, two arenas, and several basketball courts, as well as a café, childcare centre, sports store, office accommodation and a museum. Mike Ellis (basketball)
Mike Ellis (born 27 July 1958) is an Australian former basketball player who captained the Perth Wildcats of the National Basketball League (NBL) for the club's first 11 seasons, and helped guide them to two championships in 1990 and 1991. Ellis' No. 6 jersey was retired by both the Wildcats and his junior association, the Warwick Senators. Career Perth Wildcats Ellis played his entire NBL career with the Perth Wildcats, beginning with the club in their inaugural season in 1982 and captained the side every year until his final season in 1992. He helped the team win championships in 1990 and 1991. In 302 career games, Ellis averaged 12.6 points, 2.2 rebounds, 5.3 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Mark Bradtke
Mark Robert Bradtke (born 27 September 1969) is an Australian retired professional basketball player who played mainly in Australia's National Basketball League, but also had a single stint in the National Basketball Association (NBA) with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1996–97. As well as his outstanding play, Bradtke was known in the early part of his NBL career for his mullet haircut. In 2013 Bradtke was inducted into the Australian Basketball Hall of Fame for his contributions to basketball both in the NBL and for Basketball Australia. Kendal Nathaniel "Tiny" Pinder (born 25 April 1956) is a Bahamian former professional basketball player. Early life Pinder was born in the Bahamas. College career Pinder played four seasons of college basketball in the United States, first for Miami Dade College between 1975 and 1977 and then for the North Carolina State Wolfpack between 1977 and 1979. Pinder was selected in the fifth round of the 1979 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks. Professional career For the 1979–80 season, Pinder played in Israel for Hapoel Jerusalem. James Crawford (basketball)
James Crawford (born April 13, 1960) is an American former professional basketball player who played in the Australian National Basketball League from 1982 to 2003. School Crawford was born in Lower Peach Tree, Alabama, and attended Pine Hill High School in Pine Hill, Alabama. Prior to coming to Australia in 1981, Crawford attended Livingston University and Cumberland College in Kentucky. Professional career During his NBL career, the "Alabama Slamma" played for the Geelong Supercats (1982–1985), the Canberra Cannons (1986, 2003) and the Perth Wildcats (1987–1999). Cal Bruton
Calvin Thomas Bruton, (born 29 September 1954) is an American-born Australian former professional basketball player and coach. He has been an integral part of the National Basketball League (NBL) since its inception. Bruton won an NBL championship with the Brisbane Bullets in 1985, was a two-time member of the All-NBL First Team while playing for the Geelong Supercats and was named NBL Coach of the Year while he was a player-coach for the Supercats in 1982. He also won a second NBL championship while coaching the Perth Wildcats in 1990. As a result, Bruton became one of the first inductees into the NBL Hall of Fame when it opened in 1998. Mark Davis (born December 23, 1960) is an American-Australian former professional basketball player. He most notably played in the National Basketball League for the Adelaide 36ers between 1985 and 2001, gaining the nickname of "The Chairman of the Boards" for his record-breaking rebounding achievements. Born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Davis became an Australian citizen in 1992. College career Davis began his college basketball career playing for the Temple Owls. Darryl "The Iceman" Pearce (born 15 October 1960) is an Australian former professional basketball player. He played in Australia's National Basketball League (NBL) for the Adelaide 36ers from 1982 to 1991 before playing four seasons (1992–1995) with the North Melbourne Giants.
