1989 Maccabiah Games
The 13th Maccabiah Games brought 4,500 athletes to Israel from 45 nations. Jewish athletes from Hungary participated for the first time since World War II, Jewish athletes from Russia had been permitted, by their country, to play for the first time. Lithuania competed in first and second games, but had to stop because of occupation by Soviet Union. In 1989 Lithuania reentered the games and it was the first time after occupation when athletes from Lithuania participated under Lithuanian flag in competition recognized by IOC. History The Maccabiah Games are named after the Jewish warrior Judah Maccabee, who in 167 B.C. defeated Roman armies that invaded Israel. The Maccabiah Games were first held in 1932. World War II forced the games to be postponed between 1938-50. Hammer Throw
The hammer throw is one of the four throwing events in regular track and field competitions, along with the discus throw, shot put and javelin. The "hammer" used in this sport is not like any of the tools also called by that name. It consists of a metal ball attached by a steel wire to a grip. Shahar Perkiss (born 14 October 1962) is an Israeli right-handed former professional tennis player. He reached his best singles ranking of world # 53 in March 1985. He peaked at world # 54 in the doubles rankings in November 1985. Perkiss won the silver medal in singles in tennis at the 1989 Maccabiah Games, but won the gold medal in doubles playing alongside Boaz Merenstein. Howard Joffe
Howard Joffe (born October 24, 1971) is a South African tennis coach and former professional player. Playing career Born and raised in Johannesburg, Joffe ranked as high as second nationally as a junior. He was a singles gold medalist at the 1989 Maccabiah Games in Israel, defeating Israel's Shahar Perkiss, 6-4, 6-4, and a silver medalist in men's doubles. At the 1989 Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv, she won a gold medal in the women's doubles event, and was runner-up to Ilana Berger (no relation) in the singles, earning a silver medal. Ilana Berger ( he, אילנה ברגר; born 1965) is a Mexican-born Israeli professional tennis player and Olympian. Patrícia Filler Amorim (born February 13, 1969 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Jewish Brazilian former Olympic freestyle swimmer and former president of Clube de Regatas do Flamengo. She is the first female president ever of the club, elected on December 7, 2009. She was born to a bossa nova bassist and a primary school teacher.
