The 1988 European Weightlifting Championships were held in Cardiff, United Kingdom from 26 April to 3 May 1988. This was the 67th edition of the event. There were 175 men in action from 25 nations. Naim Süleymanoğlu
Naim Süleymanoğlu ( bg, Наим Сюлейманоглу; 23 January 1967 – 18 November 2017) was a Bulgarian-born Turkish Olympic weightlifter. He was a seven-time World Weightlifting champion and a three-time Olympic gold medalist who set 46 world records. At 147 cm in height, Süleymanoğlu's short stature and great strength led to him being nicknamed "Pocket Hercules". He is widely considered as one of the greatest Olympic weightlifters of all time. He is the best pound-for-pound weightlifter in the history of weightlifting. At the 1988 Summer Olympics, Süleymanoğlu set multiple world records in the featherweight division in the snatch, clean and jerk, and total. Sergey Vladimirovich Li (russian: Серге́й Влади́мирович Ли, born 5 August 1962) is a retired Soviet weightlifter of Korean origin. He won silver medals at the world championships in 1987 and 1990 and at the European championships in 1988. Ingo Steinhöfel (born 29 May 1967 in Plauen, Saxony, East Germany), is a former German weightlifter who competed at five Olympics from 1988 to 2004. He won a silver medal in the middleweight class at the 1988 Olympics. He is, jointly with fellow (East) German Ronny Weller, the second weightlifter to compete at five Olympics. The first was Hungarian Imre Földi from 1960 to 1976. Aleksandar Varbanov ( bg, Александър Върбанов; born May 9, 1964) was a weightlifter for Bulgaria. Varbanov is one of the greatest weightlifters of all-time. Alexander has the 9th highest Sinclair ever of 485.78 made up of a 167.5 kg snatch and a 215 kg clean and jerk at under 75 kg in body weight! Andreas Behm
Andreas Behm (28 November 1962 – 27 December 2021) was a German weightlifter. Behm competed at the 1992 and 1996 Summer Olympics in the lightweight category and finished in third and tenth place, respectively. Between 1981 and 1993 he won two gold, three silver and six bronze medals at European and world championships. On 7 July 1984, he set three world records, one in clean & jerk and two in the total. Ergün Batmaz (born July 16, 1967) is a Turkish European champion weightlifter competing in the lightweight division. He represented Turkey at the 1988 and 1996 Summer Olympics without success. Ergün Batmaz became European champion at the 1997 European Weightlifting Championships held in Rijeka, Croatia.
