1989 Copper Bowl
The 1989 Copper Bowl featured the 1989 NC State Wolfpack football team, NC State Wolfpack and the 1989 Arizona Wildcats football team, Arizona Wildcats. Arizona scored first on a 37-yard touchdown pass from Ronald Veal to Olatide Ogundiditimi giving Arizona a 7–0 lead throughout the 1st quarter. In the second quarter, with NC State driving, Shane Montgomery's pass was intercepted by Scott Geyer and returned 85 yards for a touchdown, making it 14–0 Arizona. Montgomery later found Todd Varn in the end zone for a 4-yard touchdown pass cutting the lead to 14–7. Arizona took a 17–7 halftime lead on a 34-yard Gary Coston field goal. In the third quarter, a 43-yard Hartman field goal made the final score 17–10. 1989 Arizona Wildcats Football Team
The 1989 Arizona Wildcats football team represented University of Arizona during the 1989 NCAA Division I-A football season. The offense scored 248 points while the defense allowed 178 points. Led by head coach Dick Tomey in his third season, the Wildcats played to an 8–4 record (5–3 in Pac-10) and participated in the first Copper Bowl which, ironically, was held at their home stadium. The Wildcats defeated North Carolina State in the bowl game. Before the season Arizona had completed the 1988 season with a 7–4 record, but missed out on a bowl game (likely due to losing to ranked teams as well as fewer bowls at the time). Fans believed that Tomey was building the team to success and the Wildcats entered 1989 with high expectations. The team earned a top-20 ranking in the preseason. Guaranteed Rate Bowl
The Guaranteed Rate Bowl is an annual college football bowl game that has been played in the state of Arizona since 1989. Played as the Copper Bowl from inception through 1996, it was known as the Insight.com Bowl from 1997 through 2001, then the Insight Bowl from 2002 through 2011, the Buffalo Wild Wings Bowl for 2012 and 2013, and the Cactus Bowl for the 2014 through 2017 seasons. In 2018 and 2019, the game was known as the Cheez-It Bowl. In 2020, Guaranteed Rate signed on as the title sponsor of the game, renaming it as the Guaranteed Rate Bowl. The ''Albuquerque Journal'' is the largest newspaper in the U.S. state of New Mexico. History The ''Golden Gate'' newspaper was founded in June 1880. Thomas David "Tim" Foley (born January 22, 1948) is a former American football player. Foley starred at Loyola Academy in Wilmette, Illinois before moving on to Purdue University, where he received All-American honors as a defensive back in 1969.
