1989 Callao Bombing
The 1989 Callao bombing was a terrorist attack that occurred on July 5, 1989, in the vicinity of the port of Callao, the main seaport of Peru. The attack targeted Soviet seamen who were stationed in the port, along with their wives. Background Relations between the governments of Peru and the Soviet Union had become stronger after Mikhail Gorbachev came to power. The two countries reached an economic agreement to allow approximately 20 trawlers to fish in the waters of the Constitutional Province of Callao in exchange for a percentage of the fishing remaining in the port. Likewise, the Soviet fishermen had permission to land on the Peruvian shore, and several shops in Callao catering exclusively to Soviet visitors were opened. The Port of Callao ( es, Puerto del Callao), officially the Callao Port Terminal ( es, Terminal Portuario del Callao), is a maritime port on the central coast of Peru, in the south-eastern Pacific, located in Callao. It is also the ''de facto'' port of the city of Lima. It is the country's main port in terms of traffic and storage capacity. Likewise, it is one of the most important in Latin America, ranking seventh and first in the South Pacific region in 2015. In 2018, the port movement in the port of Callao was 2,340,657 TEU, ranking 6th in the list of port activity in Latin America and the Caribbean. The Shining Path ( es, Sendero Luminoso), officially the Communist Party of Peru (, abbr. PCP), is a communist guerrilla group in Peru following Marxism–Leninism–Maoism and Gonzalo Thought. Academics often refer to the group as the Communist Party of Peru – Shining Path (, abbr. PCP-SL) to distinguish it from other communist parties in Peru. When it first launched its "people's war" in 1980, the Shining Path's goal was to overthrow the government through guerrilla warfare and replace it with a New Democracy. The Japanese embassy hostage crisis ( es, Toma de la residencia del embajador de Japón en Lima, ja, 在ペルー日本大使公邸占拠事件, translit=Zai Perū Nihon taishi kōtei senkyo jiken) began on 17 December 1996 in Lima, Peru, when 14 members of the Túpac Amaru Revolutionary Movement (MRTA) took hostage hundreds of high-level diplomats, government and military officials and business executives.
