1988–89 Irish Cup
The 1988–89 Irish Cup was the 109th edition of the Irish Cup, Northern Ireland's premier Association football, football knock-out cup competition. It concluded on 6 May 1989 with the final. Glentoran F.C., Glentoran were the defending champions after winning their fourth consecutive Irish Cup the previous season by beating Glenavon F.C., Glenavon 1–0 in the 1988 final. Their grip on the cup was finally broken by Linfield F.C., Linfield, who defeated them in the quarter-finals to inflict Glentoran's first Irish Cup defeat in 5 years. Ballymena United F.C., Ballymena United won the cup for the fifth time (sixth if you include Ballymena F.C., Ballymena's record), defeating Larne F.C., Larne 1–0 in the final. The Irish Football Association Challenge Cup, commonly referred to as the Irish Cup (currently known as the Clearer Water Irish Cup for sponsorship purposes) is the primary Association football, football single elimination, knockout cup competition in Northern Ireland. Inaugurated in 1881, it is the fourth-oldest national cup competition in the world. Prior to the break-away from the Irish Football Association by clubs from what would become the Irish Free State in 1921, the Irish Cup was the national cup competition for the whole of Ireland. Loughgall ( ; ) is a small village, townland (of 131 acres) and civil parish in County Armagh, Northern Ireland. It is in the historic baronies of Armagh and Oneilland West. It had a population of 282 people (in 116 households) as of the 2011 census. Loughgall was named after a small nearby loch. The village is surrounded by orchards. History In the Middle Ages the chiefs of the Uí Nialláin, a Gaelic clan, resided at Loughgall crannog, a fortified lake dwelling. By the 16th century the O'Neills of Tír Eoghain had taken over the area, and the crannog became the residence of the O'Neill chief's brother or eldest son. Dundela Football Club, nicknamed "The Duns" is a semi-professional, Northern Ireland, Northern Irish Association football, football club from Belfast, currently playing in the NIFL Championship, and plays its home matches at Wilgar Park.
