Western Soccer Alliance
Western Soccer Alliance was a professional soccer league featuring teams from the West Coast of the United States and Western Canada. The league began in 1985 as the Western Alliance Challenge Series. In 1986, it became the Western Soccer Alliance. In 1989, it existed for a single year as the Western Soccer League before merging with the American Soccer League to form the American Professional Soccer League in 1990. History Origins After the demise of the North American Soccer League in 1984 and the United Soccer League in 1985, four independent teams—F.C. Portland, F.C. Seattle, San Jose Earthquakes and Victoria Riptides—created the Western Alliance Challenge Series in the summer of 1985. After Extra Time
Overtime or extra time is an additional period of play specified under the rules of a sport to bring a game to a decision and avoid declaring the match a Draw (tie), tie or draw where the scores are the same. In some sports, this extra period is played only if the game is required to have a clear winner, as in single-elimination tournaments where only one team or players can advance to the next round or win the tournament. Peter Hattrup
Peter Hattrup (born March 31, 1964) is a retired American soccer player who played professionally in Major League Soccer and the USL A-League. Player Youth Hattrup was a four-year starter as a star player for the Seattle Preparatory School boys' soccer team. He graduated in 1982 and entered Seattle Pacific University. Hattrup was a scoring sensation for Seattle Pacific men's NCAA Division II soccer team. In 1985, he set the school record for goals scored in a single season with 26. He was more than a one-dimensional forward; his 16 assists that year ranks third on the school's list of single-season assists. That record lasted until Jason Dunn broke it in 1985. Bernie James
Bernie James (born November 25, 1958 in Coventry, England) is a former U.S. soccer player and current youth soccer coach. James spent twenty-four years as a professional, both beginning and ending his career with different versions of the Seattle Sounders. He played in the North American Soccer League, Major Indoor Soccer League, American Professional Soccer League and A-League. He served as an assistant coach with the Sounders for seven seasons and as interim head coach for one. He was a member of the U.S. Olympic soccer team which qualified for, but did not play in, the 1980 Summer Olympics due to the United States' boycott in response to the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. John Hamel
John Hamel (born January 31, 1967) is a retired American soccer midfielder who played three seasons in the Western Soccer Alliance, one in the American Professional Soccer League, one in the Continental Indoor Soccer League and at least one in the Major Indoor Soccer League. Playing Hamel grew up in Seattle where he attended Blanchet High School. He then attended the University of Washington where he played on the men's soccer team from 1985 to 1988. In 1987, he moved to the F.C. Seattle of the Western Soccer Alliance. That year he was second team All-WSA. He played for Seattle through the 1990 season. That year, the team's last in existence, was spent in the American Professional Soccer League. Jacques LaDouceur (born April 29, 1959 in Port-au-Prince, Haiti) is a Haitian-American retired soccer forward. He played two seasons in Greece before returning to the U.S. for eight seasons of indoor soccer. He also earned ten caps, scoring two goals, with the U.S. national team in 1984 and 1985. Rene Ortiz (born April 23, 1969 in Anaheim, California) is a retired Mexican-American soccer player. He spent most of his playing career in indoor soccer with two seasons in the Western Soccer Alliance and one season in Major League Soccer. Jerome Watson (born September 28, 1974) is an American former U.S. soccer forward who spent time in the Western Soccer Alliance, American Professional Soccer League and A-League. Watson grew up in San Diego, California and attended La Jolla High School. He played college soccer at the University of California, Davis, where he was named All-Conference four times and Conference MVP once. In 1988, Watson joined the San Diego Nomads of the Western Soccer League. That year he led the Nomads in scoring with six goals which also put him in second place on the WSL goals list.
