The 1988 VFL season was the West Coast Eagles' second season in the Victorian Football League (VFL). John Todd was appointed coach after Ron Alexander was sacked and Ross Glendinning remained captain. The Eagles played 22 games, winning 11 and losing 11 to finish 8th on the ladder. West Coast Eagles
The West Coast Eagles are a professional Australian rules football club based in Perth, Western Australia. The club was founded in 1986 as one of two expansion teams in the Australian Football League (AFL), then known as the Victorian Football League. The club plays its home games at Perth Stadium and has its headquarters at Lathlain Park. The West Australian Football Commission wholly owns the West Coast Eagles and the Fremantle Football Club, the AFL's other Western Australian team. The West Coast Eagles are one of the most successful clubs in the AFL era (1990 onwards). They have won the second most premierships (four, second to ) of any club in that time and were the first non-Victorian team to compete in and win an AFL Grand Final, achieving the latter feat in 1992. Clinton Browning
Clinton Browning (born 7 March 1962) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and East Fremantle in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Browning was a versatile key position player from Mingenew and started out at East Fremantle as a full-forward. A Lynn Medalist in 1984, he was easily the most prominent forward in the 1985 WAFL Grand Final, with six goals, to help East Fremantle defeat Subiaco. The following year, Browning was recruited to Hawthorn but could not break into the team and returned home. Despite being aged 27, Browning was signed by West Coast in 1989 and finally got his chance to play VFL football. He had just eight disposals on debut against North Melbourne but kicked two goals the following round against Brisbane at Carrara. Murray Rance
Murray Douglas Rance (born 25 January 1962) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Footscray and West Coast in the Victorian Football League (VFL) during the late 1980s. He was a key position player and started his career at Swan Districts with whom he won three consecutive premierships starting in 1982. After representing Western Australia at the interstate championships, Rance was recruited to Footscray and spent two seasons at the club. Guy McKenna
Guy Lindsay McKenna (born 11 May 1969) is a retired Australian rules football player and the former senior coach of the Gold Coast Football Club in the Australian Football League (AFL). McKenna played 267 games for the West Coast Eagles, including the 1992 and 1994 premiership wins. He captained the club between 1999 and 2000 AFL season. Don Langsford
Donald Leslie Langsford (born 7 May 1959) is a former Australian rules footballer who was highly successful in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) playing for the Swan Districts Football Club. Langsford was initially recruited from the Scotch College, Perth and commenced his long WAFL career in 1977. A noted defender, Langsford played mostly on the half back flank, but still managed to kick 60 career goals. He also played in four WAFL grandfinals. Swan Districts entered a period of remarkable success in the early 1980s by winning a hat-trick of premierships in 1982, 1983 and 1984 with Langsford being an integral part of the team. Brent Hutton
Brent Hutton (born 15 April 1964) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and Swan Districts in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). A local from Bassendean, Hutton had his breakthrough season for Swan Districts in 1984 when he was used as a full-forward and kicked 83 goals to win the league's goal-kicking award. He kicked five goals in that year's grand final win over East Fremantle. Hutton spent much of the 1985 season as a defender due to a loss of form but by 1987 was club captain. The Claremont Football Club, nicknamed Tigers, is an Australian rules football club based in Claremont, Western Australia, that currently plays in the West Australian Football League (WAFL) and WAFL Women's (WAFLW). Its official colours are navy blue and gold. Peter Higgins (Australian Footballer)
Peter Higgins (born 11 October 1966) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Higgins played at both under-19s and reserves level with the Carlton Football Club but didn't make an appearance in the seniors. A ruckman, he joined Claremont in 1987 in search of greater opportunities and participated in their WAFL premiership team that year. South Fremantle Football Club is an Australian rules football club based in Fremantle, Western Australia. The club plays in the Western Australian Football League (WAFL) and the WAFL Women's (WAFLW), commonly going by the nickname the ''Bulldogs''. Richard Geary
Richard Geary (born 24 September 1963) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with Richmond and the West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL). Geary came from Mitcham and played Under-19s football with Fitzroy. He transferred to Richmond without playing a senior game and made his VFL debut with his new club in 1985. A wingman and half forward, Geary spent two seasons playing for Richmond. The West Coast Eagles later secured his services but he made just two appearances. Shane Ellis (born 27 September 1960) is a former Australian rules footballer who played with the West Coast Eagles in the Victorian Football League (VFL) and East Fremantle in the West Australian Football League (WAFL). Ellis won East Fremantle's 'Fairest and Best' award in 1982 and twice played in losing Grand Finals with the WAFL club, in 1984 and 1986. Joe Cormack
Joe Cormack (born 30 August 1966) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for the West Coast Eagles and Fitzroy in the Victorian/Australia Football League (VFL/AFL). West Coast recruited Cormack from Swan Districts, where he had played since 1986. He spent two seasons with the West Coast Eagles but was unable to cement his spot in the team and was traded to Fitzroy, for Dale Kickett. At a much weaker club, Cormack was able to get regular games and when Fitzroy defeated Sydney at the SCG in 1992, his two goals and 31 disposals earned him three Brownlow Medal votes.
