Donald Wayne Riegle Jr. (born February 4, 1938) is an American politician, author, and businessman from Michigan. He served for five terms as a United States House of Representatives, Representative and for three terms as a United States Senate, Senator in the U.S. Congress. Early life and family Donald Wayne Riegle Jr. was born on February 4, 1938, to Donald W. Riegle Sr., Donald Wayne Riegle Sr., son of John Louis Riegle, owner of the Riegle Press and future mayor of Flint, MI and Dorothy Grace Riegle in Flint, Michigan. Riegle is a graduate of Flint Central High School. He attended Flint Junior College (now Mott Community College) and Western Michigan University, graduated with a B.A in business administration and economics from the University of Michigan–Flint, University of Michigan-Flint in 1960, and received an M.B.A. in finance from Michigan State University in 1961. James Whitney Dunn
James Whitney Dunn (born July 21, 1943) is an American politician and businessman from the Michigan. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1983 before unsuccessfully seeking reelection. He ran for the Senate in 1988, but was defeated by Democratic incumbent Donald W. Riegle, Jr. He sought another term in the U.S. House in 1990, but lost in the Republican primary to Dave Camp. Biography Dunn was born in Detroit, Michigan and attended the public schools. He received a B.A. from Michigan State University in 1967. He was president, Dunn & Fairmont, builder and developer. He was a delegate to the Michigan State Republican convention in 1982. In 1980, Dunn defeated incumbent Democrat Bob Carr to be elected as a Republican from Michigan's 6th congressional district to the 97th Congress, serving from January 3, 1981 to January 3, 1983. The 1988 United States presidential election in Michigan took place on November 8, 1988. All 50 states and the District of Columbia, were part of the 1988 United States presidential election. Voters chose 20 electors to the Electoral College, which selected the president and vice president. Michigan was won by incumbent United States Vice President George H. W. The 1988 United States presidential election was the 51st quadrennial presidential election held on Tuesday, November 8, 1988. The Republican nominee, incumbent Vice President George H. W. Bush, defeated the Democratic nominee, Governor Michael Dukakis of Massachusetts. This was the first presidential election since 1948, and the most recent to date in which a party won more than two consecutive presidential terms. This also remains the most recent election in which a candidate won over 400 electoral votes. Additionally, this was the last time that the Republicans won the popular vote three times in a row. The 1988 United States Senate elections was an election for the United States Senate in which, in spite of the Republican victory by George H. W. Bush in the presidential election, the Democrats gained a net of one seat in the Senate. Seven seats changed parties, with four incumbents being defeated. The Democratic majority in the Senate increased by one to 55–to–45. This is the last Senate election in which California voted for a Republican and both Texas and Maine voted for Democrats, and the last time Arizona would do so until 2018. This would also be the last Senate election until 1998 to not have at least one special election during that cycle.
