The 1988 Tour of the Basque Country was the 28th edition of the Tour of the Basque Country cycle race and was held from 4 April to 8 April 1988. The race started in Beasain and finished in Otzaurte. The race was won by Erik Breukink of the Panasonic team. Erik Breukink
Erik Breukink (born 1 April 1964) is a former Dutch professional road racing cyclist. In 1988, Breukink won the youth competition in the Tour de France. In 1990, finished 3rd in the 1990 Tour de France. Most recently, he served as the manager of the team. Biography Amateur cycling years Born in Rheden, Breukink was born in a cycling family, as his father Willem Breukink was director of the Gazelle bicycle factory. Despite this, he chose to be a footballer. In 1980 he changed to pursue a cycling career. In 1982, this appeared to be a good choice, when he won the Dutch national pursuit championship for juniors. At the 1984 Olympic Games, Erik Breukink competed with Gert Jakobs, Maarten Ducrot and Jos Alberts in the 100 km Team Pursuit and finish fourth place. Marino Lejarreta
Marino Lejarreta Arrizabalaga (born 14 May 1957) is a retired Basque professional road racing cyclist. His biggest victory was capturing the 1982 Vuelta a España, a Grand Tour stage race, and he is the inaugural and record three-time winner of the Clásica de San Sebastián (1981, 1982, 1987), which is now considered a one-day classic. In 1989, Lejarreta captured the Volta a Catalunya repeating one of his first professional wins in 1980 at the same event. Career Lejarreta rode very well in the 1982 Vuelta, but initially finished 2nd to Ángel Arroyo while coming in just eighteen seconds ahead of Michel Pollentier. Following the race however, Arroyo and several other riders failed doping controls in one of the biggest scandals in Vuelta history making the young Basque rider the de facto winner of the race. Acácio Da Silva
Acácio Mora da Silva (born 2 January 1961 in Montalegre, Portugal) is a Portuguese former professional road bicycle racer. He was a professional from 1982 to 1994 during which he won stages in the Tour de France, the Giro d'Italia and stages in many other stage races. He won three stages in total in the Tour de France, one in 1987, one in 1988 and one in 1989. After his stage win in 1989, he wore the yellow jersey as leader of the general classification for four days. In 1986 he won the Züri-Metzgete and was also the Portuguese national road champion. Jean-Claude Bagot
Jean-Claude Bagot (born 9 March 1958) is a French former professional cyclist. He raced professionally between the years of 1983 and 1994. He is most known for winning one stage in the 1987 Giro d'Italia and winning the general classification in the 1984 Tour Méditerranéen. He also competed in a total of 17 Grand Tour (cycling), Grand Tours, including nine editions of the Tour de France, three of the Giro d'Italia and five of the Vuelta a España. His best finish was ninth overall in the 1989 Vuelta a España. His son, Yoann Bagot, Yoann, also competed as a professional cyclist, but retired in 2019. Pedro Muñóz Machín Rodríguez (born 6 November 1958 in Mieres) is a former Spanish professional road bicycle racer. He won a stage in the 1981 Vuelta a España and finished on the podium in 2nd place overall. He received a penalty for testing positive for the stimulant Methylphenidate (Ritalin) on stage 17 of the 1982 Vuelta a España. He finished the race in 25th overall. In 1983 he finished in 8th place overall at the Vuelta and won a stage in the 1983 Giro d'Italia finishing in 11th place overall. In 1984 he rode the Tour de France for the first time and performed well. He finished 2nd to Greg LeMond in the Young rider classification and 8th place overall. Pedro Delgado Robledo (; born 15 April 1960), also known as Perico (), is a Spanish former professional road bicycle racer. He won the 1988 Tour de France, as well as the Vuelta a España in 1985 and 1989. Delgado is 171 centimetres tall (5 ft 7-1/2 in) and used to weigh 64 kilograms (141 lb). He was a good climber, with an aggressive style, making cycling a spectacle, which gained him fans. On one hand, there were days when he was extremely successful attacking. On the other, he occasionally suffered from big losses of time due to mistakes or strokes of bad luck. He was also a good time-trialist until the nineties, when it became difficult for him to adapt to technical changes in the time-trial bicycles. Zegama, popularly known as "The shadow of Aizkorri", is a town and municipality in the Goierri region of the province of Gipuzkoa, in the autonomous community of the Basque Country, northern Spain.
