1988 Purefoods Hotdogs Season
The 1988 Purefoods Hotdogs season was the 1st season of the franchise in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). Transactions Newest member The Purefoods Corporation burst into the basketball scene when they joined the Philippine Amateur Basketball League (PABL) two years ago in 1986. When the Tanduay ballclub announces its gonna take a leave of absence beginning the 1988 PBA season, Purefoods acquired its rights and the contracts of six of the Tanduay players namely; Ramon Fernandez, Freddie Hubalde, Padim Israel, Willie Generalao, Jose Yango and Onchie Dela Cruz, and were able to lure the best amateur standouts for its maiden appearance in the PBA. An added bonus was the offer for Fernandez to serve as the team's playing-coach of the team, thus becoming the third player-coach in the league following Anejo Rhum's Robert Jaworski and San Miguel Beer's Norman Black. Ramon Fernandez
Ramon Sadaya Fernandez (; born October 3, 1953) is a Filipino former professional basketball player and current commissioner of the Philippine Sports Commission. Fernandez won four PBA Most Valuable Player awards and a record 19 PBA titles. Fernandez stood at 6'4 barefoot during his prime but due to mild gigantism grew to 6'5 during his final seasons. He scored 18,996 points to finish as the PBA's all-time scoring leader. He is also the PBA's all-time leader in rebounds, blocked shots, free throws made, playing minutes and second all-time in assists, games played and steals. He played for five teams in his entire PBA career starting with the Toyota, Manila Beer, Tanduay, Purefoods and San Miguel. San Miguel Beermen
The San Miguel Beermen are a professional basketball team in the Philippine Basketball Association (PBA). It is one of three PBA clubs owned by the San Miguel Corporation group of companies along with the Magnolia Hotshots and Barangay Ginebra San Miguel. It is the most successful franchise in the history of the PBA and the only remaining original franchise in the league. Kenny Travis (born February 6, 1965) is a retired American professional basketball player. Career A junior college standout, Travis played two years at New Mexico State from the 1985–86 to 1986–87 season. In his final year, he averaged 20.2 points, 7.3 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 1.8 steals with a 46.4% hit from the three-point range. Lawrence "Ray" Hall (sometimes known as Sugar Ray Hall; born June 23, 1962) is an American former college basketball player. He is currently the all-time leader in scoring, free throws made, field goals made and steals for the Canisius Golden Griffins men's basketball. He formerly held various records, including career points, for the ECAC-North Conference (now America East Conference). He led Canisius in scoring and steals all four years. The 1988 PBA season, 1988 Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) PBA Reinforced Conference, Reinforced Conference was the third and last conference of the 1988 PBA season. Tim McCalister
Tim McCalister (born November 23, 1964, in Gary, Indiana) is an American former basketball player best known for his collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma from 1983 to 1987. He stood at 6'3" and played guard. Throughout his four-year career, he scored 2,275 career points. He also had 628 assists, along with 319 steals. McCalister was selected 47th overall and in the third round by the Los Angeles Clippers in the 1987 NBA draft, but never played in the NBA.
