The 1988 Marlboro Cup was a four team soccer tournament hosted at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum in August. The four teams competing were the League of Ireland XI, Club Universidad de Guadalajara, El Salvador and Guatemala. The Guatemala national football team ( es, Selección de fútbol de Guatemala) represents Guatemala in men's international football and is controlled by the ''Federación Nacional de Fútbol de Guatemala''. Founded in 1919, it has been affiliated to FIFA since 1946, and it is a member of CONCACAF. The team has made three Olympic tournament appearances, competing at the 1968, 1976, and 1988 Olympic Games. Mick Neville (footballer)
Michael Neville (born 25 November 1960 in Dublin) is an Irish former footballer who played for Home Farm, Drogheda United, Shamrock Rovers, Derry City, and Shelbourne. Neville started off with Home Farm where in three seasons he made 85 league appearances. He joined Drogheda United at the start of the 1982–83 season where he made 26 league appearances in his one season there. Neville then moved to Milltown where he won four League of Ireland titles and three FAI Cups making 116 league appearances in five seasons. In total he made 179 appearances, including 6 appearances in European competition, scoring 20 goals. During this time he also for the League of Ireland XI in 6 qualifiers and two further Inter League games. He then joined Derry City in 1988 and in his first season he won the domestic treble. Carlos Castañeda Mendez (born 4 January 1963) is a former Guatemalan footballer who was a member of the Guatemala national team and represented Guatemala at the 1988 Olympic Games. Club career A forward, Castañeda played for CD Suchitepequez and C.S.D. Comunicaciones in Guatemala. International career At the 1988 Olympics, he scored a goal in a 5-2 loss to Italy in Guatemala's first match (a header off of a free kick) and started all of Guatemala's three matches. In qualifying for the 1990 World Cup, Castaneda scored a crucial goal (escaping the marking of John Limniatis to score a header from a corner) versus Canada in the second leg of Guatemala's second round encounter giving Guatemala a 2-0 lead which eventually helped Guatemala advance to the final round of CONCACAF qualifying on away goals.
