1988 Individual Long Track World Championship
The 1988 Individual Long Track World Championship was the 18th edition of the FIM speedway Individual Long Track World Championship. The event was held on 18 September 1988 at Scheeßel in Germany, which was West Germany at the time. The Championship format was altered with 16 rider fields and 8 riders in each heat. The top 8 scorers qualified for the semi-final heats with (points carried forward). The world title was won by Karl Maier of West Germany for the fourth time. Egon Müller
Egon Müller (born 26 November 1948 in Kiel, Germany) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider and was winner of the Speedway World Championship in 1983, winning the title in his homeland with a maximum score of 15 points. Career Motorcycle speedway Egon Müller won the German Champion eight times (1973, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1984 and 1985). He rode briefly in the United Kingdom in 1973 for the Coatbridge Tigers (Scotland), and in 1976 for the Hull Vikings. Despite him only appearing for a handful of meetings in 1976, Hull were granted a 'Egon Muller (Rider Replacement)' facility for the entire 1977 season. Müller won the Long Track World Championship in 1974, 1975 and 1978. He finished second in 1980 and 1984, and finished third in 1976 and 1982. Ari Koponen (speedway Rider)
Ari Koponen (20 July 1959 – 28 April 2018) was a Finnish motorcycle speedway rider. Career In 1978, Koponen joined the Birmingham Brummies for the 1978 British League season, this was his first season in the British leagues. The following year he won a bronze medal at the 1979 Individual Speedway Junior European Championship. He remained with Birmingham for five years, scoring over 800 points until he joined Wimbledon Dons in 1983. It was in 1983, that Koponen became the national champion of Finland after winning the Finnish Individual Speedway Championship. In 1984, Koponen switched from Wimbledon to join the Swindon Robins where he enjoyed two successful seasons in 1984 and 1985. Also in 1985, he won a second Finnish national championship. In 1987, he won his third and final Finnish national championship. He was also a long track rider and reached the Individual Speedway Long Track World Championship final in 1988. Steve Baker (born 25 June 1963) is a former international speedway rider from Australia. Speedway career Baker reached the final of the Speedway World Pairs Championship in the 1987 Speedway World Pairs Championship. Also in 1987, he finished runner up in the Australian Championship. He rode in the top tier of British Speedway from 1981 to 1985, riding for various clubs. He was the 1983 European Junior Champion, a competition that non-European riders could enter. Simon Cross
Simon James Cross (born 31 May 1965 in Hereford, England) is a former motorcycle speedway rider who spent most of his career with the Cradley Heathens. Career Simon Cross and Kelvin Tatum finished runner-up in Speedway World Pairs Championship in 1988 and he finished runner-up in the British Championship in 1990.2007 British Final Match Programme He won the National League Pairs Championship in 1983 with Martin Yeates. In early 1987, Cross was part of a touring troupe to Australia which included (among others) World Champion Hans Nielsen, Tommy Knudsen, Shawn Moran and Rick Miller. While in Australia he won the 1986/87 Western Australian State Championship at the Claremont Speedway in Perth. 1987 also saw Cross qualify for his first and only World Final, run over two days at the Olympic Stadium in Amsterdam. Kai Juhani Niemi (born 15 September 1955 in Pori, Finland) is a former international motorcycle speedway rider who represented the Finland national speedway team. Career He reached four World Championship finals, finishing a career best fourth in 1985 at the Odsal Stadium in Bradford, England. The performance in 1985 from a rider from the minor nations of speedway came as a surprise to many and he was level on points with three other riders leading into the last set of heats but was unable to score in heat 17, which resulted in a fourth place finish. Niemi won the Finnish National Championship a record nine times during his career (1977, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1984, 1988 and 1990) Niemi rode for the White City Rebels in the British League from 1976 to 1978, winning the league championship with the team in 1977.
