1988 Gulf Cup Of Nations
The 9th Arabian Gulf Cup ( ar, كأس الخليج العربي) was the 9th edition of this tournament. It was held between March 2 and March 18, 1988, in Saudi Arabia. It was the second time after 1972, that Saudi Arabia hosted this regional football tournament. The tournament was won by Iraq. It was the third title for Iraq after having won the tournament 1979 in Baghdad and 1984 in Muscat. All games were played at the newly built King Fahd International Stadium in Riyadh. The stadium was built to host the 1988 Gulf Cup and the FIFA World Youth Championship one year later. Having scored four goals each, Ahmed Radhi from Iraq and Zuhair Bakhit from the UAE shared the top-scorer award. Habib Jaafar (Iraq) was voted as best player, Oman's goalkeeper Yousif Obaid won the best-goalkeeper-award. Oman achieved their first victory in the Gulf Cup tournament after beating Qatar 2–1. Majed Abdullah
Majed Ahmed Abdullah ( ar, ماجد احمد عبد الله; born 11 January 1959) is a Saudi Arabian former footballer who played for Al-Nassr and the Saudi national team. Abdullah is the all-time leading goalscorer for Saudi Arabia with 72 goals in 117 games. At club level, he is the record goalscorer for Al-Nassr and is the all-time top scorer of the Saudi Professional League. He was often referred to by his nickname "Arabian Jewel". Majed Abdullah is regarded as one of the greatest Western Asian strikers of all time. He was nominated for IFFHS Asia's Player of the Century, finishing third place. He spent his entire club career at Al-Nassr, and scored 189 league goals in a twenty-one-year career. Arabian Gulf Cup
The Arabian Gulf Cup ( ar, كأس الخليج العربي, ''Kass Al-Khaleej Al-Arabi''), often referred to simply as the Gulf Cup, is a biennial football competition governed by the Arab Gulf Cup Football Federation for its eight member nations. The history of the competition has also seen it held every three to four years due to political or organisational problems. History The idea for the tournament was established at the 1968 Summer Olympics, and the first Arabian Gulf Cup took place in 1970 which was won by Kuwait. Kuwait has been the most successful team in the tournament's history, winning 10 tournaments out of 24 in total, while Saudi Arabia, Qatar and Iraq all have three titles. The current champions are Bahrain, who defeated Saudi Arabia in 2019 to win their first title. Laith Hussein Shihaib Al-Tawlid ( ar, ليث حسين شهيب التولد; born 13 October 1968) is an Iraqi former football player who was the captain of the Iraqi national team. He was vital to speaking out against Uday Hussein, the chairman of the Iraqi Olympic Committee, who was known for his brutality against the football team. International career Hussein made his international debut at the age of 17 in 1986. He played in the 1988 Olympics in Seoul and helped Iraq win the Asian Youth Championship in Doha. Basil Gorgis
Basil Gewargis Hanna or Basil Korkis ( ar, باسل كوركيس ) (born 8 January 1961) is a former Iraq national football team, Iraqi international football player of Assyrian people, Assyrian descent. Despite having a short career, he is considered to be one of the best players of all time in Iraq, being known for his tenacity and attacking threat.
