The 1988 Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League season is the 2nd season of the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse, that began on January 3, 1988, and concluded with the championship game on March 20. On May 15, 1988 the league was renamed Major Indoor Lacrosse League (MILL), a name the league would keep for the next ten years. National Lacrosse League
The National Lacrosse League (NLL) is a men's professional box lacrosse league in North America. The league is headquartered in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The NLL currently has fifteen teams: ten in the United States and five in Canada. The NLL ranks third in average attendance for pro indoor sports worldwide, behind only the National Hockey League, NHL and National Basketball Association, NBA. Unlike other box lacrosse leagues which play in the summer, the NLL plays its games in the winter and spring, from December to June. Each year, the playoff teams battle for the National Lacrosse League Cup. The NLL has averaged between 8,900 and 10,700 spectators per game each year since 2004. Indoor Lacrosse
Box lacrosse, also known as boxla, box, or indoor lacrosse, is an indoor version of lacrosse played mostly in North America. The game originated in Canada in the 1930s, where it is more popular than field lacrosse. Lacrosse is Canada's official national summer sport. Box lacrosse is played between two teams of five players and one goalie each, and is traditionally played on an ice hockey rink once the ice has been removed or covered. The playing area is called a box, in contrast to the open playing field of field lacrosse. The object of the game is to use a lacrosse stick to catch, carry, and pass the ball in an effort to score by shooting a solid rubber lacrosse ball into the opponent's goal. The highest level of box lacrosse is the National Lacrosse League. While there are 62 total members of World Lacrosse, only fifteen have competed in international box lacrosse competition. Joe Gold
Joe Gold (born Sidney Gold; March 10, 1922 – July 11, 2004) was an American bodybuilder and businessman. He was the founder of Gold's Gym and World Gym. He has been credited with being the father of the bodybuilding and the fitness craze. Early life Joe Gold was the youngest of four siblings, Robert Gold (born Ruben Gold), Nathan Gold and Eunice Gold Fiss. His parents, Max Gold (born Abraham Mordechai Goldglejt) and Jennie Gold Glick Sussman (born Zelda Feierman) were both Jewish emigrants having relocated from Belarus to Boyle Heights, Los Angeles. Max Gold was the neighborhood junk collector and the family's back yard and garage served as a makeshift junk yard. His mother, Jennie, was a seamstress who divorced Joe's father and remarried two additional times. Joe attended Theodore Roosevelt High School. Washington Wave
The Washington Wave was an American lacrosse team. They were a member of the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League and the Major Indoor Lacrosse League from 1987 to 1989. They were based in Washington, D.C. and played in the Capital Centre in Landover, Maryland. The team's first coach, Bud Beardmore, was the respected former coach who won two national titles with the Maryland Terrapins. New Jersey Saints
The New Jersey Saints were one of the founding teams in the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League (renamed in 1989 to the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, and then again in 1998 to the National Lacrosse League). They played at the Brendan Byrne Arena in East Rutherford, New Jersey. The Saints won the 1988 Eagle Pro championship. After the 1988 season, they moved to Long Island, New York and became the New York Saints The New York Saints are a former member of the National Lacrosse League. Larry Quinn
Lawrence J. Quinn (born March 9, 1963) was an All-American lacrosse goaltender at the Johns Hopkins University from 1982 to 1985, leading the Johns Hopkins Blue Jays to the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship in 1984 and 1985, and two additional finals appearances in 1982 and 1983. Career Quinn was high school All-American in Levittown N.Y., who twice won the Lt. Raymond Enners Award as the nation's top player,. Quinn also won the Ensign C. Markland Kelly, Jr. Award in 1984 and 1985 as the nation's best goalie. Quinn also won World Lacrosse Championship, world championships with the U.S. National Team in 1986, 1990 and 1994. He played 11 years in the United States Club Lacrosse Association (USCLA), leading his team to three titles, and played two years in the Major Indoor Lacrosse League, MILL, winning a championship with the New Jersey Saints in 1988. 1988 Philadelphia Wings
The Philadelphia Wings were one of the original four franchises in the Eagle Pro Box Lacrosse League, joining the New Jersey Saints, Washington Wave, and Baltimore Thunder in 1987. The Wings were still in a growing phase in 1988 and recorded 3 wins and 6 losses that season. Once again, though, the team was able to draw in fans, with a home attendance of 48,910 (over 12,000 per game).
