1987 World Weightlifting Championships
The following is the final results of the 1987 World Weightlifting Championships. The men's competition was held in Ostrava, Czechoslovakia and the women's competition was held in Daytona Beach, Florida, United States. The women's competition was the first women’s world championship in weightlifting. Oksen Mirzoyan
Oksen Mirzoyan ( hy, Օգսեն Միրզոյան, born 11 June 1961) is a former Soviet Armenian weightlifter and European, World and Olympic Champion. Mirzoyan was awarded the Honoured Master of Sports of the USSR title in 1984 and the Honored Coach of Armenia title in 1998. Biography He was born in the village of Angeghakot, Sisian Oblast, Armenian SSR. In 1965, his family moved to the village Baghramyan, Echmiadzin region. In 1977, he began weight training under the guidance of Ashot Vilasyana. In the following year, he was able to perform with the normal masters of sports of the USSR. In 1981, Mirzoyan became a member of the USSR national weightlifting team. Mirzoyan became a European and World Champion in 1983 by winning gold medals at the 1983 World Weightlifting Championships and 1983 European Weightlifting Championships, both in Moscow. Ivan Chakarov
Ivan Chakarov ( bg, Иван Чакъров), also known as "James Dean" of weightlifting, born 1966, is a Bulgarian world class weightlifter who won gold medals in the 91 kg class at the 1993 World Weightlifting Championships in Melbourne, Australia and in the 90 kg class at the 1991 European Weightlifting Championships in Władysławowo, Poland. He also competed in the men's middle heavyweight event at the 1992 Summer Olympics. Chakarov won European Cup with the team of Bulgaria in Angers 1988 and Sofia 1989. He began training in 1979 at the Chernomorets Burgas Club. His first coach is Konstantin Darov. Chakarov competed for Chernomorets until 1985. After that, until the end of his long and successful career, he competed only for CSKA Sofia. His personal coaches were Andon Nikolov, Rumen Alexandrov and Neno Terziyski. Asen Zlatev ( bg, Асен Златев; born May 23, 1960) is a former Bulgarian weightlifter. Zlatev is an Olympic champion from the Moscow 1980 Olympic Games in Russia, in the category of up to 75 kg. At the age of 11 he joined the first group of weight lifting trainees in the Vasil Levski Sports School under the leadership of Gancho Karushkov. Sergey Vladimirovich Li (russian: Серге́й Влади́мирович Ли, born 5 August 1962) is a retired Soviet weightlifter of Korean origin. He won silver medals at the world championships in 1987 and 1990 and at the European championships in 1988. Ingo Steinhöfel (born 29 May 1967 in Plauen, Saxony, East Germany), is a former German weightlifter who competed at five Olympics from 1988 to 2004. He won a silver medal in the middleweight class at the 1988 Olympics. He is, jointly with fellow (East) German Ronny Weller, the second weightlifter to compete at five Olympics. The first was Hungarian Imre Földi from 1960 to 1976.
