3000 Metres
The 3000 metres or 3000-metre run is a track running event, also commonly known as the "3K" or "3K run", where 7.5 laps are run around an outdoor 400 m track, or 15 laps around a 200 m indoor track. It is debated whether the 3000m should be classified as a middle-distance or long-distance event. In elite-level competition, 3000 m pace is more comparable to the pace found in the longer 5000 metres event, rather than mile pace. The world record performance for 3000 m equates to a pace of 58.76 seconds per 400 m, which is closer to the 60.43 seconds for 5000 m than the 55.46 seconds for the mile. However, the 3000 m does require some anaerobic conditioning, and an elite athlete needs to develop a high tolerance to lactic acid, as does the mile runner. Cornelia Bürki
Cornelia Bürki (born 3 October 1953) is a South African-born retired long-distance runner who represented Switzerland in three consecutive Olympic Games, starting in 1980, with her best result being fifth in the 1984 3000 metres final. She is a 47-time Swiss national outdoor champion, which includes a fifteen-year undefeated streak in cross country and fifteen consecutive titles over 1500 metres, from 1975 to 1989. She was voted the Swiss Sports Personality of the Year in 1978. That year she finished fifth at the 1978 IAAF World Cross Country Championships. Annette Sergent
Annette Sergent (born 17 November 1962) is a French former long-distance runner. She represented her country three times at the Summer Olympics, but it was in cross country running that she had her greatest success. She became the first Frenchwoman to win a world title in the sport at the 1987 IAAF World Cross Country Championships and won for a second time in 1989. In addition to these victories, she made eleven appearances at the competition and placed third in both 1986 and 1988. Her sole major track medal came over 10,000 metres at the 1990 European Athletics Championships, where she was the bronze medallist. Deborah Dawn "Debbie" Scott-Bowker (born 16 December 1958) is a Canadian former middle- and long-distance runner. A three-time Olympian for Canada (1984, 1988 and 1992), she reached the 1500 m final in 1984, and both the 1500 m and 3000 m finals in 1988. Christine Benning (née Tranter, born 30 March 1955) is an English former middle-distance runner who competed mainly in the 1500 metres and the 3000 metres. In the 1500 m, she represented Great Britain at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, finishing fifth in the final. She won a silver medal at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton. Vera Michelle, née Steiert (born 6 November 1958) is a retired (West) German middle and long-distance runner, born in Lindau. In her early career she competed in 3000 metres at the 1983 World Championships, without advancing from the heats. She finished fourth at the 1982 European Indoor Championships and also fourth at the 1983 European Indoor Championships. She later started doubling in both 1500 and 3000 metres. Mary Knisely
Mary Knisely (born Schilly; May 29, 1959) is a retired middle- and long-distance runner from the United States. She set her personal best (8:42.84) in the women's 3000-meter run on 13 July 1987 at a meet in Nice. Knisely is a two-time US national champion in the 3000 m (1986 and 1987), and was the marathon national champion in 2001. She competed as a student at Concord High School. In 2008, the Delaware Sports Museum and Hall of Fame inducted Knisely. Lynn Kanuka-Williams ( Kanuka; born July 11, 1960) is a Canadian athlete from Regina, Saskatchewan. She competed in 3000m races, as well as a smaller number of 1500m races.
