Stadio Olimpico
The Stadio Olimpico (English: ''Olympic Stadium'') is the largest sports facility in Rome, Italy, seating over 70,000 spectators. It is located within the Foro Italico sports complex, north of the city. The structure is owned by the Italian National Olympic Committee and it is used primarily for association football. Mathias Schersing (born 7 October 1964 in Halle) is a retired East German sprinter who specialized in the 400 metres. At the 1986 European Championships he won the bronze medal in the 400 metres in a lifetime best of 44.85 seconds and finished sixth in the 4 × 400 metres relay. He had already won the bronze medal at the European Indoor Championships the same year. At the 1988 Summer Olympics he finished fourth in the relay. Anton Skerritt (born January 3, 1964) is a Trinidadian/Canadian former sprinter, and soccer player. As a sprinter he competed in the 1984 Summer Olympics, 1988 Summer Olympics, 1987 World Championships in Athletics, 1986 Commonwealth Games, and the 1989 Jeux de la Francophonie. As a soccer player he played in the Canadian National Soccer League, and the Canadian Professional Soccer League. After his retirement from professional sports he became a vice principal for Vaughan Secondary School in Vaughan, Ontario. Gabriel Tiacoh
Gabriel Tiacoh (February 9, 1963 – April 2, 1992) was a sprinter from Côte d'Ivoire who specialised in the 400 metres. He is best known for winning his nation's first Olympic medal, in the 400 meters in 1984. A former African record holder, he was the African champion over the distance in 1984 and 1989, as well as being the silver medallist in 1985 and 1988. He competed at the World Championships in Athletics in 1983 and 1987, finishing seventh in the 400 m final at the latter edition. He represented Côte d'Ivoire at the Olympics for a second time at the 1988 Seoul Games, but did not make the final. He died of tuberculous meningitis in 1992 in Atlanta, Georgia at the age of 29, survived by his only daughter Alexis Tiacoh. He had a personal best of 44.30 seconds for the 400 m. David Kitur (born October 12, 1962) is a retired Kenyan runner, who specialised in 400 metres. In 1983, at the inaugural world championships he was part of the Kenyan 4x400 metres relay team, which reached semifinals. He competed at the 1984 Summer Olympics, in 400 metres and 4x400 metres race, reaching semifinals in both. At the 1987 All-Africa Games, held in Nairobi, Kenya, he finished second behind Innocent Egbunike of Nigeria. He finished sixth in the 400 metres race at the 1987 World Championships. Derek Redmond
Derek Anthony Redmond (born 3 September 1965) is a retired British sprinter. During his career, he held the British record for the 400 metres sprint, and won gold medals in the 4x400 metres relay at the World Championships and European Championships. At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Redmond tore his hamstring in the 400 metres semi-final but continued the race limping and, with assistance from his father, managed to complete a full lap of the track as the crowd gave him a standing ovation. Although Redmond was disqualified and listed as "Did Not Finish" due to the outside assistance finishing the race, the incident has become a well-remembered moment in Olympic history, having been the subject of one of the International Olympic Committee's "Celebrate Humanity" videos and been used in advertisements by Visa as an illustration of the Olympic spirit and featured in Nike's "Courage" commercials in 2008.
