1987 Tampa Bay Buccaneers Season
The 1987 Tampa Bay Buccaneers season was the franchise's 12th season in the National Football League the 12th playing their home games at Tampa Stadium and the first under head coach Ray Perkins. It was a year of great change for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ organization in the National Football League. Perkins had only needed three seasons to build the Giants into a playoff team, and it was hoped that he would be able to repeat the feat with the Buccaneers. They improved over their 2–14 record from 1986 and finished 4–11. The Buccaneers possessed the first overall pick in the NFL Draft, and used it to select University of Miami quarterback Vinny Testaverde. The Buccaneers appeared changed and won four games early in the season, but they notably lost large leads in later games and fell from playoff contention after midseason. NFC Central
The National Football Conference – Northern Division or NFC North is one of the four divisions of the National Football Conference (NFC) in the National Football League (NFL). Nicknamed the "Black and Blue Division" for the rough and tough rivalry games between the teams, it currently has four members: the Chicago Bears, Detroit Lions, Green Bay Packers, and Minnesota Vikings. The NFC North was previously known as the NFC Central from 1970 to 2001. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were previously members, from 1977, one year after they joined the league as an expansion team, until 2002 when they moved to the NFC South. Leeman Bennett
Leeman Bennett (born June 20, 1938) is a former American football coach who served at both the collegiate and professional levels, but is best remembered as head coach of the National Football League's Atlanta Falcons and Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Early life A native of Paducah, Kentucky, Bennett graduated from the University of Kentucky, playing at both quarterback and defensive back under head coach Blanton Collier for three seasons beginning in 1958. During Collier's final season with the Wildcats in 1961, Bennett began his coaching career by serving as an assistant coach with the team. Coaching career College Bennett continued the following year under new head coach Charlie Bradshaw, then served in the military the next two years. 1989 NFL Draft
The 1989 NFL draft was the procedure by which National Football League teams selected amateur college football players. It is officially known as the NFL Annual Player Selection Meeting. The draft was held April 23–24, 1989, at the Marriott Marquis in New York City, New York. The league also held a supplemental draft after the regular draft and before the regular season. Four of the first five players selected in the draft – quarterback Troy Aikman, running back Barry Sanders, linebacker Derrick Thomas, and cornerback Deion Sanders – would be inducted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Tackle Tony Mandarich, the only top five pick not inducted, is considered a draft bust. Ronald Ramon Heller (born August 25, 1962) is an American football coach and former offensive tackle, who played twelve seasons in the National Football League for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Philadelphia Eagles and Miami Dolphins. Heller is the former assistant offensive line coach for the New York Jets of the National Football League (NFL), a position he assumed in February 2013 to January 2016. Playing career As a football player, Heller, a graduate of Penn State was chosen by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the fourth round of the 1984 NFL Draft, where he played offensive tackle. He was traded to the Seattle Seahawks who in turn traded him to the Philadelphia Eagles for a fourth round draft pick. The 6-foot-6, 290-pound Heller started all but one game for the Eagles at right tackle in 1988. Overall, he played in 75 regular season contests for Philadelphia, at both right and left tackle. Mike Tomczak
Michael John Tomczak (born October 23, 1962) is a former American football player. Tomczak played quarterback for several NFL teams from 1985 through 1999, including the Chicago Bears, the Green Bay Packers, the Cleveland Browns, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. He was the offensive coordinator for the Pittsburgh Power of the Arena Football League until 2014 when they ceased operations. Early life, family and education Tomczak is of Polish descent.
