1987 New Mexico Lobos Football Team
The 1987 New Mexico Lobos football team was an American football team that represented the University of New Mexico in the Western Athletic Conference (WAC) during the 1987 NCAA Division I-A football season. In their first season under head coach Mike Sheppard, the Lobos compiled a 0–11 record (0–8 against WAC opponents) and were outscored by a total of 444 to 209. The team's statistical leaders included Barry Garrison with 3,163 passing yards, Shane Hall with 315 rushing yards, and Terance Mathis with 1,132 receiving yards and 48 points scored. The number of televised games for the team expanded. KGSW-TV 14 (now KLUZ-TV) broadcast five of the team's road games; the first three and the final two; live. Mike Sheppard (American Football)
Mike Sheppard (born October 29, 1951) is an American football coach and former player. Sheppard was an assistant at Idaho State when it won the NCAA Division I-AA title in 1981. He was a wide receiver for the Cal Lutheran Kingsmen when they won the 1971 NAIA Division II Football National Championship. In the national championship game, Sheppard was named the defensive player of the game. In 1983 as offensive coordinator at Kansas, he helped guide quarterback Frank Seurer to 2,789 yards and 14 touchdowns. Running backs Kerwin Bell, E. J. Jones, and Robert Mimbs combined to run for 1,295 yards and 9 TD. WR Bob Johnson had 58 catches for 1,154 yards and 7 TD. The team scored over 30 points in five games despite finishing the season at 4–6–1 including a 26–20 win over #10 USC and a 37–27 win over #19 Missouri. Arizona–New Mexico Football Rivalry
The Arizona–New Mexico football rivalry is an American college football rivalry between the Arizona Wildcats and New Mexico Lobos. They have met 67 times on the football field. Arizona leads the series 44–20–3. Kit Carson Rifle From 1938 to 1990, the winner of the rivalry took ownership of the Kit Carson Rifle. The gun is a Springfield Model 1866 rifle that is rumored to have once belonged to the famous frontier scout, Kit Carson. Game scores from each game are carved into the stock of the rifle. San Diego Stadium was a multi-purpose stadium on the west coast of the United States, in San Diego, California. The stadium opened in 1967 as San Diego Stadium and was known as Jack Murphy Stadium from 1981 to 1997. 1987 Air Force Falcons Football Team
The 1987 Air Force Falcons football team represented the United States Air Force Academy in the 1987 NCAA Division I-A football season. The Falcons offense scored 405 points while the defense allowed 269 points. At season's end, the Falcons appeared in the 1987 Freedom Bowl. The Sun Bowl is an outdoor football stadium in the southwestern United States, on the campus of the University of Texas at El Paso. It is home to the UTEP Miners of Conference USA, and the late December college football bowl game, the Sun Bowl.
