The 1987 NAIA Division I football season was the 32nd season of college football sponsored by the NAIA, was the 18th season of play of the NAIA's top division for football. The season was played from August to November 1987 and culminated in the 1987 NAIA Champion Bowl playoffs and the 1987 NAIA Champion Bowl, played this year on December 19, 1987 at Cameron Stadium in Lawton, Oklahoma, on the campus of Cameron University. Cameron defeated in the Champion Bowl (a re-match of the previous year's final, won by the Eagles), 30–2, to win their first NAIA national title. Conference realignment Conference changes * This was the final season that the NAIA officially recognized the football champion from the Central States Intercollegiate Conference (CSIC). Cameron Stadium (Oklahoma)
Cameron Stadium is an outdoor football stadium adjacent to the campus of Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pennsylvania. Facilities and amenities Located one mile from campus. It is the host of W&J's home football games, men's and women's soccer, lacrosse, and field hockey, and intramural activities. The main playing surface is Matrix turf, installed by Hellas Construction in 2009. The eight-lane, all-weather track was resurfaced in 2003. The stadium is home to the Towler Hall, located next to the field house, which is the home to the W&J Athletic Hall of Fame. Plaques featuring the names of each individual that has been inducted into the Hall of Fame hang on the wall. Towler Hall also has a large banquet room with capacity for 135–150 people. The adjacent Eaton/Gentile Room contains athletic memorability from the college's past. Athletic training rooms are located under the home bleachers. 1987 NCAA Division III Football Season
The 1987 NCAA Division III football season, part of the college football season organized by the NCAA at the Division III level in the United States, began in August 1987, and concluded with the NCAA Division III Football Championship, also known as the Stagg Bowl, in December 1987 at Garrett-Harrison Stadium in Phenix City, Alabama. 1987 NCAA Division I-A Football Season
The 1987 NCAA Division I-A football season ended with Miami winning its second national championship of the 1980s in an Orange Bowl game featuring a rare No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup between the top ranked Oklahoma Sooners and the Hurricanes. Miami's first three games were against ranked opponents in what was labeled a rebuilding year. After some late game theatrics by Michael Irvin against rival Florida State, the Hurricanes were 3–0, the national media started to take notice. Oklahoma was also seen as quite the juggernaut, averaging 428.8 yards rushing per game with their potent wishbone offense. Miami was able to hold Oklahoma to just 179 yards on the ground, winning the game 20–14. Also having notable seasons were Syracuse, LSU and Florida State.
