1986 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships
The 1986 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships (''1986 WJHC'') was the tenth edition of the Ice Hockey World Junior Championship and was held from December 26, 1985, until January 4, 1986. It was held mainly in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. The Soviet Union won the gold medal, its seventh championship, Canada won silver and the United States won bronze. The bronze medal was the first for the Americans in tournament history. Shayne Corson
Shayne Paul Corson (born August 13, 1966) is a Canadian former professional hockey player who played in the National Hockey League (NHL) for the Montreal Canadiens, Edmonton Oilers, St. Louis Blues, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Dallas Stars. During his NHL career, Corson battled both ulcerative colitis and, as detailed in the October 22, 2001, issue of ''Sports Illustrated'', panic attacks. He last played in the 2003–04 season. Despite some speculation to the contrary, Corson did not return to the NHL after the 2004–05 lockout and is now retired. Background and early career Corson was born in Midland, Ontario. Stratford, Ontario
Stratford is a city on the Avon River within Perth County in southwestern Ontario, Canada, with a 2016 population of 31,465 in a land area of . Stratford is the seat of Perth County, which was settled by English, Irish, Scottish and German immigrants, in almost equal numbers, starting in the 1820s but primarily in the 1830s and 1840s. Most became farmers; even today, the area around Stratford is known for mixed farming, dairying and hog production. Jiří Kučera (born March 28, 1966) is a Czech professional ice hockey coach and former player. He is currently the head coach of HC Litvinov. During his playing career he played for HC Plzen and Dukla Jihlava in his home country and for Tappara in Finland, Luleå HF in Sweden, and EHC Kloten in Switzerland. Stephen Leach
Stephen Morgan Leach (born January 16, 1966) is an American ice hockey coach and former professional ice hockey player. He is currently the head coach of the Valley Jr. Warriors '99 Elite squad. He is the uncle of Jay Leach. Playing career As a youth, Leach played in the 1979 Quebec International Pee-Wee Hockey Tournament with the Boston Braves minor ice hockey team. Leach was raised in Lexington, Massachusetts and played his high school hockey at Matignon High School, where he transferred to as a sophomore. He won three consecutive Massachusetts HS hockey titles from 1982 to 1984. His older brother Chris played D1 hockey at St. Lawrence. Selected by the Washington Capitals in the second round of the 1984 NHL Draft, Leach played for the Capitals for parts of six seasons. Radek Ťoupal (born August 16, 1966 in Písek, Czechoslovakia) is a former ice hockey player. His debut in Czechoslovak ice hockey league came in season 1982/1983, playing for HC České Budějovice, when he was only 16. James Sandlak, Jr. (born December 12, 1966) is a Canadian former professional ice hockey player who spent 11 seasons in the National Hockey League and was known as "the House" due to his large stature. Playing career Sandlak played major junior with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League (OHL). Heading into the 1985 NHL Entry Draft he was regarded as one of the top-rated players for the draft. He was selected by the Vancouver Canucks with the fourth overall pick; at 6'4" and 220 lbs he was chosen to address the Canucks' desire for a big scoring forward. Joe Nieuwendyk
Joseph Nieuwendyk ( ; born September 10, 1966) is a Canadian former National Hockey League (NHL) player. He was a second round selection of the Calgary Flames, 27th overall, at the 1985 NHL Entry Draft and played 20 seasons for the Flames, Dallas Stars, New Jersey Devils, Toronto Maple Leafs, and Florida Panthers. He is one of only 11 players in NHL history to win the Stanley Cup with three or more different teams, winning titles with Calgary in 1989, Dallas in 1999 and New Jersey in 2003. A two-time Olympian, Nieuwendyk won a gold medal with Team Canada at the 2002 winter games. Valeri Viktorovich Kamenski (russian: Валерий Викторович Каменский) (born 18 April 1966) is a Russian former professional ice hockey player. Playing career Before the National Hockey League (NHL), he started his career with Khimik Voskresensk in the Soviet Championship League (1982–1985) and then played for the powerhouse club CSKA Moscow (1985–1991). Joe Murphy (ice Hockey)
Joseph Patrick Murphy (born October 16, 1967) is a Canadian former professional hockey player who was chosen first overall in the 1986 NHL Entry Draft. Murphy won Calder Cup and NCAA championships before reaching the NHL. Although Murphy struggled to make the expected impact after being selected first overall by the Detroit Red Wings, he was traded to the Edmonton Oilers in 1989. His production began to increase significantly in the 1990 playoffs to help Edmonton win their fifth Stanley Cup in seven seasons, and this success continued through his time in Edmonton. A contract dispute led to a trade to the Chicago Blackhawks in 1993, where he remained very productive. Brantford ( 2021 population: 104,688) is a city in Ontario, Canada, founded on the Grand River in Southwestern Ontario.
