Listed below are the dates and results for the 1986 FIFA World Cup qualification rounds for the South American zone (CONMEBOL). The South American zone was allocated 4 places (out of 24) in the final tournament. South America's qualifying berths were taken by Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil and Paraguay. Tournament Structure The 10 teams were divided into 3 groups. The teams played against each other on a home-and-away basis. The number of teams and spots for each group were as follows: *Group 1 had 4 teams. The group winner would qualify. The South American ( CONMEBOL) zone of qualification for the 1990 FIFA World Cup saw 9 teams competing for 2 direct places at the finals, with one extra place potentially on offer to the winner of a play-off. CONMEBOL member Argentina qualified automatically as reigning World Cup champions. Format Teams were divided into 3 groups of 3 teams each. The teams would play against each other on a home-and-away basis. The 2 group winners with the best record would qualify. Ecuador National Football Team
The Ecuador national football team ( es, Selección de fútbol de Ecuador) represents Ecuador in men's international football and is controlled by the Ecuadorian Football Federation (FEF). They joined FIFA in 1926 and CONMEBOL a year later. Discarding an invitation to participate in the inaugural FIFA World Cup held in Uruguay, Ecuador did not make their tournament debut until 2002. After finishing above Brazil and Uruguay in the standings, the qualifying campaign marked the emergence of several players, such as Agustín Delgado, Álex Aguinaga, Iván Hurtado, Ulises de la Cruz and Iván Kaviedes, who would set the stage for Ecuador's achievements in the next decade.
