3000 Metres
The 3000 metres or 3000-metre run is a track running event, also commonly known as the "3K" or "3K run", where 7.5 laps are run around an outdoor 400 m track, or 15 laps around a 200 m indoor track. It is debated whether the 3000m should be classified as a middle-distance or long-distance event. In elite-level competition, 3000 m pace is more comparable to the pace found in the longer 5000 metres event, rather than mile pace. The world record performance for 3000 m equates to a pace of 58.76 seconds per 400 m, which is closer to the 60.43 seconds for 5000 m than the 55.46 seconds for the mile. However, the 3000 m does require some anaerobic conditioning, and an elite athlete needs to develop a high tolerance to lactic acid, as does the mile runner. Elly Van Hulst
Elisa ("Elly") Maria van Hulst (born 9 June 1959) is a former middle distance runner from the Netherlands. She competed in the 800 m and 1500 m events at the 1984 Summer Olympics and in the 1500 m and 3000 m at the 1988 Summer Olympics; her best achievement was ninth place in the 3000 m in 1988. During her career she set one world record, on 4 March 1989 at the 1989 European Indoor Championships in Athletics in the 3000 m event (8:33.82), as well as three national records: in the mile (1986, 4:22.40), 1500 m (1987, 4:03.63) and 3000 m (1988, 8:33.97). In 1989 she was named Dutch Sportswoman of the Year. She started training in ballet, but had a limited success because of her height. At age 11 she started training in athletics, together with her elder brother. When she was in high school, she moved from Maastricht to Leeuwarden. Sandra Gasser
, Sandra Gasser (born 27 July 1962 in Bern) is a retired Swiss track and field athlete who specialised in middle distance running. After the 1987 World Championships, where she achieved third place in the 1500 metres, she failed a doping test and was disqualified. After her two-year ban she rejoined the world elite and picked up the bronze medal at both the 1990 European Championships and 1993 World Indoor Championships, although in the final of the latter she fell before the finish line. Sandra Gasser won seven Swiss championship titles, and still holds the Swiss national record at 800 metres. She is 1.71 m tall (5'7") and her competition weight was 52 kg (114 lb). Doina Melinte
Doina Ofelia Melinte (; née Beșliu on 27 December 1956) is a retired Romanians, Romanian middle-distance runner. She competed at four Olympics (1980–92), and won a gold medal in the 800 metres and a silver medal in the 1500 metres in 1984. She won the world indoor title in 1987 and 1989 and the European indoor title in 1985, 1988 and 1990 in the 1500 m. Her world indoor mile record of 4:17.41 in 1990, stood for 26 years. Career Melinte competed as Doina Beșliu at the 1980 Summer Olympics, 1980 Moscow Olympics and reached the semi-finals of the 800 metres. Maria Fernanda Moreira Ribeiro, GCIH (; born 23 June 1969), is a long-distance runner born in Penafiel, Portugal. The pinnacle of her career was at the 1996 Summer Olympics when she won the women's 10000 m gold medal, establishing a new Olympic record of 31:01.63. Her victory gave Portugal its third Olympic gold medal. Biography Ribeiro started running with Grupo Desportivo do Kolossal, before joining FC Porto, which she represented from 1982-1992. Christin Sørum (born 12 January 1968) is a retired Norwegian long-distance runner who specialized in 3000 metres and cross-country running. She represented IL Skjalg. In 3000 m she won a silver medal at the 1985 European Junior Championships, finished fifth at the 1986 World Junior Championships and fourteenth at the 1986 European Championships, having established a personal best time of 9:00.13 minutes in the heats of the latter competition. Her highest place from the IAAF World Cross Country Championships was a 21st place from 1986. In the team competition there she finished ninth, which was a repeat from 1985. Martine Fays (born 3 August 1959) is a French distance runner who competed mainly in the 3000 metres and cross country running events. She made eight appearances for France at the IAAF World Cross Country Championships between 1982 and 1991. She won three women's team medals (two silver and one bronze), running alongside compatriots Annette Sergent, Anne Viallix, Jacqueline Lefeuvre, Maria Lelut and Marie-Pierre Duros. Her best individual finish at the competition was fourth at the 1986 race, where she was pipped to the bronze by teammate Sergent. On the track, Fays set a French national record in the 3000 m with a run of 8:46.18 minutes (a lifetime best) at the 1987 Meeting Nikaïa. She ranked in the top twenty runners for that event in the 1987 season and 1989 season.
